I can only manage it for 1.5 - 2 mins.

Should I just keep working on it, or do more traditional cardio to build staminia first?

There was a study that showed that HIIT was better at improving cardio than regular cardio. You can use shorter bouts (maybe 30 sec intense, 1 min less intense) during 15 min and gradually increase the intense time and decrease the less intense one.

Aerobics class staring at some fine peice of ass is the only way I'd do cardio

I was doing 30 secs intense then 30 seconds less intense. Unfortunately my lack of fitness owned me.

Light - medium cardio I can can do for ages.

what do you mean you can't do it, you mean it feels uncomfortable? I would think if you lose bodily function and can't mentally push yourself to move physically any further, then you can't do it.

But I doubt that's the case.

I mean I have trouble breathing sufficantly to keep going. I have no problems with pushing myself (at least when I'm motivated - the times of not being motivated and I the fact I had other issues put me in this position).

Somewhere between 40-50% body fat and weight at about 105 kilos.

It just seems strange that I can do some cardio like say a bike for an hour plus, I can manage 20 pushups but I can only do HIIT for 3-4 30 second intervals.

Perhaps I should keep trying to push just on more session.
