:hs: Might be a bit dumb but,

When doing higher reps lower weight does it just build up your muscular endurance/strength or does it make muscles look better/more toned?

Does anyone alternate between high rep low weight and low rep high weight?

from past threads about this, i got the conclusion that:

high reps, low weight = toned, bulk
low reps, high weight = strength, not as bulky

    low reps = 3-6 reps

    alright here it is....

Low Reps are for strength, high reps are for getting toned/cut!!!!!

so do high reps all the time and you will be more sliced than Brad Pitt in Fight Club!!!!!

can someone actually explain what lower reps does for you vs higher reps? all i heard is lower reps is for strength and higher reps is for size, but i also heard lifting more weight = bigger muscles.

my friends are all over the "REPS = TONE" bullshit, and its fucking annoying waiting for my friend to do 300 crunches during our workouts.

    ok...

PL'ers use lower reps to train their CNS to strain agaisnt maximal weights so they can get strong. Higher reps will cause more hypertophy which makes the muscle bigger but a bigger muscle will also be a stronger muscle. So if you never do anything under 8 reps for 5+ years but pack on 50+ lbs of solid mass you will be stronger but your CNS won't be as efficient as straining agaisnt maximal weights.

edit: also you can not "tone" a muslce. You can only alter bf% levels or amount of muscle mass.

try 'em both and see how your body responds. i personally got better results going with higher reps/lower sets.

thanks for clearing that up. so it makes sense to switch up the routine between low reps and high reps (im thinking 10-12, maybe 15 on some lifts) to hit both sides of the cns-muscle spectrum..

High reps for mass/bodybuilding, low reps for strength/power training. So says Arnold. Amen.
