    ?

I've found quite a few Ford Explorer's with around 100k miles in the area for ~$5000. The Explorer could do what I want it to do, but how reliable are they? When they break are they expensive to fix?

Also, I test drove a '96 Jeep Cherokee today. It was the 4.0 w/4wd. I liked it, drove nice, except this particular one didn't want to stay running. After I turned on the A/C it would die at stop lights, then continued that behavior after I turned off the A/C. The transmission shifted kinda rough and took it's time, waiting longer to shift than I would have expected.

The Explorers aren't bad...they're not the most reliable, but they're also not unreliable. Also, they're cheap to fix, as they're popular as hell.

As long as I can flip it back over and it still runs... I don't care.

I've found a few really nice looking ones for good prices. Eddie Bauer's with all the buttons. I'm just trying to avoid picking up a vehicle that's going to drain me financially when it comes to maintenance.

I could mention just about any vehicle and there will be somebody on OT who can post a response claiming that somebody they knew owned one and that it was crap.

Good point... in that case I'll look for a base model. :o All I need is the towing capacity anyway.

What would you suggest for $5000? It needs to be able to tow up to 2000 lbs. and get me to work every day.

I've been keeping an eye out for those too. There aren't any in town, I'd have to drive at least an hour to an hour and a half just to look at one for what I want to spend.

...and even then, the ones priced where I want to spend are at or over 10 years old.

Aye, read my first post. :o

I have definitely been on the lookout for one of those. They're very easy to find on my budget. I've found a few, but I'm also kinda looking for a V-6 Ranger or S-10. Having a truck with an open bed would be very useful.

Only if it's really well-maintained. If there's anything wrong with it it's only a sign of things to come.
