    Not to ask a stupid question, but in order to benefit from HD-DVD, would you need a HDTV?

    Yes.
    VHS = 220 lines of resolution
    dvd = 480 lines...either interlaced or progressive

    Standard def tv's display 480 lines of resolution interlaced.
    HD tv's can display from 480 lines to 1080 lines.
    HD-DVD is up to 1080 lines progressive.

    I agree with guy above me....without an HDTV, the high def DVD player will look the exact same as a regular one because both will only be displaying 480 lines of resolution because thats all your current tv would be able to display.
