    Hey,

How are you liking your 70-300?

I've just started a project that will require me to purchase a macro lens of some sort...

Looking at your Sigma 70-300... But you're the only one I know that's ever used it...

    Thoughts?

Anyone else have any recommendations on cheaply priced macro lenses?

Nikkor 105mm Non-vr can be had for about 400-500. Excellent lens. If I was home i could post some of my shots with it. Its super crisp and sharp

I like it and it takes pretty good macro pictures from a not so macro distance. Since the macro mode only comes into play past 200mm you don't have to be really close to get a close up macro. Good for animals and such. Other than that, the thread i posted with the flowers was taken with it, as well as the following picture.

It does pretty well for long range use as well, but gets kinda soft around the 300mm mark. The detail isn't there, or i'm doing something wrong.

As far as price, the one i got was the APO at around $190. I don't know what other lenses you have, or if what you have now will work for macro, but don't get this lens if you need to get really close. It'll do macro no problem, but you can be a little farther away.

+1 for the Nikon 105 micro or 105VR if you've got the cash. It's my favorite by far, works great with TC's.

    Backwards thifty FTW.
Nikon 105mm f/2.8 Macro + backwards 50mm open at f/1.8 positioned in front = UberMacro

I also have a Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6, but it can get soft around 300mm.

I used it for the my shot in the 1st photo competition.

If you are on a budget, then a prime 50mm and some extension tubes would be my choice, if you want a zoom aswell, go for a Sigma. And if youw ant something more expensive, ask the right questions.

It focuses slow but it's actually a very sharp lens (esp compared to my kit lens) and it is built well.

I'm selling that nikon to my friend that just picked up a d50 :hs: if he backs out for some reason I'll let you know.

Hey 70-300 guys - do you have the APO or non APO versions of the lens?

Did you play with both? Notice a difference?

there's a ~$80 difference on amazon for this lens... Not sure why...

Mine doesn't say APO on it so I'm guessing it's not that.

Mine is the APO lens, it supposedly makes the image sharper, but it only really works on whites. I would suggest trying them out, because I admittadly only ever got to a try an APO version before buying, as such, I bought an APO.
