Helping this girl drop about 50 lbs...

    So a friend of mine used to be in fantastic shape. She was a competitive athlete and always very fit. About 2 years back, she had a battle with cancer and as a result put on a great deal of weight, and lost any muscle she carried. Good news is, she beat the cancer, and has dropped some weight and resumed her triathlon training. She said in the past her race weight would be around 125, normal weight around 135. She is sitting somewhere around 170 now. She is training twice a day 3-4 days a week, and once a day 2x a week, usually swimming in the morning, running in the evening. The thing that's killing me is her diet is already very good compared to most people. I've told her to cut out a few things, but for the most part it's pretty good. All I really want to see is her eliminate some simple carbs and fats from a couple meals and bump her protein. She's dead set on competing again by summer, so I've gotta make this happen.

    Looking for support from my f+n brotatos.

    She does...but she knows I know fuck lots more about nutrition.

    Basically, she is making progress, but not fast enough and asked for my help.

    PSMF for a month. But that and lots of cardio dont go hand in hand.

    Limit carbs to breakfast and before/after 2nd workout.

    Its not that bad, I did it when I went from 240 -> 200 (many moons ago) for like a month. If she can hold off on training for a month it would be atleast a good start for her.

    PSMF doesn't work with traditional morning cardio?

    Yeah not going to work with her cardio load.

    Giving her a moderate protein intake, solid ammount of low GI carbs throughout the day, and low fat (added omega 3's). I'll see what happens and adjust.

    Sure it can. You'd want to keep it slow and steady.

    But that's a whole different story from an endurance athlete.

    Maybe she's having trouble losing weight from the affects of chemo/radiation therapy on her metabolism?

    Also, how far off is the triathlon?

    i agree with hallock .. go easy with how you train her bro ..

    thats awesome you're there for her .. mad props chief .. keep us all updated .. motivation and confidence is a huge step in getting her going man .. thats the best way to start .. if you were an athlete before .. its hella easy to get back into the swing of things .. but it sounds like she hit a pretty big wall there .. keep us updated

    What made her weight go up? Was it related to treatment or sedentary lifestyle during and post-treatment?

    At a weight like that IMO she shouldn't be training (necessarily) for the triathlon, but getting weight down so she can train without risk.

    A lot of out of shapers use a marathon/triath as something to strive for fitness wise but often times it ends in ankle or knee or hip/shoulder issues because of the weight. Maybe up the swimming and bike for now and ease on the running?

    As hardcore as she wants to be, her body (specifically joints) are not used to that heavy an impact (they think she's 130 lbs).

    I don't know much about endurance training (helped friend train for marathon, another for triath) but from what I understand injuries are insanely common to those with lofty goals so soon.

    Case in point: my brother and best friend were training for a triathlon and both got injuries from trying to step up their running too fast and both are in good shape to begin with.

    I'm sure her metabolism is fucked from the chemo. That shit basically kills your body from the inside out. I don't know how she feels about T3, but I'm going to suggest her a light dose of it to make sure her metabolism stays where it needs to be.

    I know she is planning for a local one some time in may. I believe 2 months later she has a qualifier for the ironman which is what she really wants to aim for (I know the ironman is crazy....I'm not stopping her).
