    I got a new laptop with a fresh XP install and everytime I turn it on it asks whether to boot to Windows or the dos deal. So if I don't catch it and select windows, it goes to dos after 2 min. Then I have no idea how to get out of there, and I have to take the battery out just to turn it off.

    I tried going to startup & recovery and unchecked "time to display list of operating systems" but it didn't do anything. Any help would be appreciated, cause I'm clueless.

    edit the boot.ini settings from windows (start - run - msconfig.exe). take out the dos operating system line and be done.

    It says
    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP HomeEdition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

    On startup it says you have to select either Slax or Windows. What the hell is slax?

    try doing an fdisk /mbr in dos prompt.

    Sounds like someones installed another OS before.
    **sorry if this fucks your boot**

    okay, looks like you will need a copy of the fdisk program to do that.
