well, i am plenty prepared for gov computers and if it were on a personel network then it would be off to the bit torrent sites for a boot disk, however i cant get that on a gov pc, and the one im trying to fix isnt mine.....im just trying to help the guy out

are you SURE there's no recovery partition on the disk? check with your favorite MBR editing tool...A linux boot cd that gives you a shell would work too. Just use its fdisk util.

Just curious because it might be possible to trigger the restore manually.

Oh wow some more uninformed Vista hate :ugh:

But I agree, put XP on it since there is no other choice.

wrong, some well informed Vista hate. i love how anyone who dislikes Vista is immediately labeled ignorant by the ignorant people who can't justify why Vista is any good. on the other hand, us "ignorant" people can list plenty of reasons why Vista is in almost no way an upgrade.

    Labelled you ignorant? Nope.

Yet I can justify Vista as an upgrade, albeit a fairly minor one; DirectX 10. Since I don't make a point of looking into operating systems, I'm sure there are greater benefits I don't know about. All I know is it works, and saying it sucks is pretty ridiculous.

You can't call anyone ignorant for investing in an OS that has support for a longer period than XP.

I guess some people are really into buying two operating systems within a year or so.

no but you could use your net access to download a linux boot cd right? If you're asking for a download you must have some access.

This is kind of like all the Dell hate. I don't understand that, as no one really has any defining facts on all the Dell hate on here.

oh baby, dont get me started. my company has one of the biggest contracts with dell in the world and i see hundreds of them. they suck.

when you buy a dell now, some of their computers come with parts so generic there is not even a serial number on it! when a MB fails, you cant just get a new one, because theres not markings to tell you what you need? how generic!
i hate my life as a sys admin/hardware repair with dell, but we do have some badass IBM machines, and the dell servers are pretty nice
