I was recently asked by one of my clients to shoot a fashion show that they are participating in.

The show is going to be at a local nightclub / bar, so I'm guessing the following factors will play a role in my preparation:

    1. It will probably be dark, atmospheric lighting
    2. There's no formal runway, so I'll probably be at the same level as the models

This is my first time shooting people for an event. I'm about to order my flash, and I'll probably be learning it in the few days leading up to the show.

I'm planning on shooting with my 85 1.8, do you think it's a good idea?

    I'm shooting with a 30D btw.

85 seems really long if you're going to be right up there next to the models

yeah, i think its going to be way too long. I've been contemplating buying a 28mm 1.8 for indoor / available light stuff. think it's a good idea?

i'm planning on using some pretty powerful flash

these photos aren't going to be great, but it's going to be good experience.

if i could get this result, i'd be happy:

also, i just got some additional details... the models are going to be walking across the bar. so I'll probably be significantly lower than them.

    any tips on shooting upwards?

carry two flashes with you, so you can change between them as one of them starts overheating

last thing you want is to kill your flashes from shooting way too constantly, ive heard of people killing them like that.

How high is the ceiling? What colour is it? Is it flat?

it's a pretty high ceiling... the venue is in a historic building converted into a loft type space. So I'll probably not get good results with bouncing off the ceiling.

I'm thinking the 580ex II and a Gary Fong lightsphere...

I had to shoot a fashion show in a club for one of my friends a while back. I used a 24-70 f2.8L, and even that was a little long (the club was pretty cramped).
