You're in cali so you can rule out basically everything anyone suggests as it will most likely be illegal. Juss get a good ol' savage 30-06 with a 9x3-40 scope. You'll never become bored at the range with that. You can get a 30-06 or a 7mm mag for arund $430 in their package deals. I own a savage .243 and its a great gun.

I really enjoy mine. i almost get 2MOA on a good day which is fine for plinking as far as i'm concerned. knocking around a coke can at 100 yards is pretty fun.

what do you intend to do with the rifle? hunt, plink, shoot bottle caps at 100 yards or all of the above. also how much money are you looking to spend?

Really depends on what kind of shooting you want to do.

Fun gun, maybe an SKS? Picked up mine for $130. Pretty fun to shoot.

    Savage 10FP .308-$480 new (no AccuTrigger :( )

If they're legal in CA, i'd definitely get a M1A.

Otherwise, i'd join the crowd in suggesting a bolt with nice optics like the Savage 10 series. i'd get .308 for the ammo choices since i'd be just target shooting, but if you'd hunt with it, the 7mm or .30-06 might be better choices. Pair it up with some decent budget optics from Tasco and you'll have a handy sub-MOA shooter on the cheap.

While not a bastion of accuracy, my Mini-14 isn't too bad. At 100yds, I put together 1-1.5" groupings.

However my Howa 1500 JRS Classic is incredible for accuracy.

The SKS is a fun, cheap shoot. I enjoy shooting both of mine. Just don't expect long range accuracy.

An even cheaper shot would be a .22 or .22mag rifle. My wife shoots a Ruger 10/22 with bullbarrel, etc and puts together some really tight groups. My Savage 93G in .22mag is a good shooter as well.

It really depends on what you feel like doing with it and how much money you wish to spend. For a casual shooter, you won't want something like my Howa. It will beat you up too quickly.

I would choose the M1A. I have a Chinese one and a Springfield Scout. Great shooters and a lot of fun. Very pricey however, over a grand for the American one.
