    my next box will be an athlon 64 3200+ or thereabouts. i'm confused was to which shuttle to get. the only difference so far that would affect me at all is the chipset, and the front display.

    http://us.shuttle.com/specs2.asp?pro_id=489 (SK83G)
    * via k8m800 chipset
    * front display doesn't have the homo 6-in-1 reader i don't need
    * onboard VGA (good for my linux box)
    * i'm leaning towards this because the front display is "normal" like my existing shuttle

    http://us.shuttle.com/specs2.asp?pro_id=486 (SN85G4V2)
    * nforce3 150 chipset
    * faggy 6-in-1 reader i won't use
    * no onboard VGA (bad for my linux box)

    does anyone have any thoughts on this? i know the nforce3 150 chipset did good in benchmarks... haven't been able to find comparisons between the VIA and nforce yet though. if anyone finds them please post.

    so i'm thinking one of those two shuttles - $298 or $310
    athlon 64 3200+ (maybe 3400, depends on the price when i order) - $268
    1 gig of ram - $150 approx
    1 74 gig 10k rpm WD raptor SATA drive - $195
    1 MSI geforce 6800 256m agp 8x dual dvi - $500

    $1400 approx. the video card is just.. splurging. heh

    i want to build two boxes actually. one will be my primary windows box. the other will be a linux box that is setup like my servers (the new ones) - so i want to run debian-amd64 on it. so i'll get the same shuttle, chip, ram, etc. and some cheapo video card (i probably have a spare here... just need like 8 megs or some crap - if i get the SK83G it's got onboard VGA already, yet another bonus)

    and whammo. then i will have 2 shuttles and my laptop. that's all i need, and i will be selling off the rest.

    I agree with Faz on the nForce. It looks like you know what you're looking for in hardware. I would suggest checking out Gentoo as a Linux distro though.

    Another vote for the nForce board here. Love my Asus SK8N!

    I've got revision 1 of the shuttle box you listed with a 64bit 3200+. The system is super fast. It runs really nice with xp pro 64bit. You can get the OS free from MS for a 360 day trial.
    I'm going to warn you now, that raptor will really heat the system up and the GForce isn't going to help. You may need to look at something else for cooling. What kind of PSU does that video card need? The shuttle only has a 240w psu. Mine runs fine with a Radeon 9800 pro, 36gb raptor and a cdrw/dvd drive, but that 6800 is a pig on power. The other thing that could screw you is if the video card is a double height as the agp slot is on the outside, so you don't have a lot of room between a normal card and the side of the case.
