Here's the situation: my brother is an airman. He has a two year old son he likes to see, but is divorced. While I'm happy to drive the baby to where he is, it might not always be feasable (six hours to keesler is fine for a weekend, but I don't know if I could go much farther). Basically we want to find an effective and affordable to get my nephew time to see his father.

The obvious solution is space available travel. But is the baby (and one of us adult siblings) eligible? I don't think they'll cart a two year old kid around for us, so he'd need a caretaker who is not a dependent to my brother. So any advice on how we can get this to work out? Any general advice on space-A?

Unless things have changed Space A travel is only for military personnel, their dependents and retirees.

Good stuff. So any advice on the best way to get my nephew to where ever his daddy is stationed?

:dunno: A family member would have to drive/fly/bus up to where he is or he'll have to fly down and visit his son when he is on leave. If he is only on leave for a short period of time I would not recommend he use SpaceA travel, I would suggest he purchase a plane ticket.

You would have had to have driven to San Antonio had you been able to do it. Where is your brother stationed?

He's at keesler now. I think he said he's going to Moody AFB next.

Is that in Georgia? There isn't SpaceA travel in/out of Georgia as far as I know...

Best of luck to you with this, hope you can figure something out for your brother.

have him check with his personel office. Since his kid is too young to fly, they may allow a family member to become a limited CAC(common access card) holder.
We have had non military members get them so they can shop for retired folks. Its a stretch, but it may work.. worth at least a try.Worst they could say is no.

I know family members whos mothers have CAC and live with the family on base.. its a bunch of paper work and stuff..

Glassuser.. you might just want to call an airline and ask them if you can get a discount.. i know AA Might give you a discount.

He doesn't have a military ID and the child is too small to have one so that wouldn't work for him.

Regardless, sometimes AA's military ticket is more expensive than a regular ticket. I asked an agent why this was and they said the military ticket is one that allows cancellations and rescheduling without penalties, which is why the fare isn't always lower.

best bet would be to ask one of the port people around here (i know we have a few)

but yeah, unless the kid has an ID card, or is in DEERS, you're sorta screwed.

Perhaps it's the destination? Flying out of Houston the prices I have been quoted have always been around $350 and up

North Houston (FM1960 and Woodland areas) FTW. Or Clear Lake FTW. Stay away from the east side (refineries FTmfL).
