I have the chance to purchase a new Canon 50D body for $985. Retail packaged with everything included as new. The guy who bought it opened the camera box but never could afford the glass to put on it, or so his story goes.

For my $1k is this the best body I can get myself? I've looked around and I know the price is good. The models I have considered were the D200, D80, XSi, & 40D. The 50D seems much nicer. Have I overlooked something?

The main reason for my hesitation is that he is selling a new product for over $300 cheaper than the lowest internet price. I'd hate to spend $985 on a stolen 50D. He said the warranty card was included but I'd assume you need a valid retail purchase receipt to use it. Im waiting to hear back from him about the receipt.

    What would you guys do?

Save up another $2-300 and get a used 5D. Or buy a used 40D for $650 and put the rest of your money into glass.

the guy just got back to me. The shutter count is 150, which makes it used instead of new. It also makes it seem a little less fishy but the deal is not as good seeing as its used equipment.

I thought of getting a 40D or D200 and putting the savings into glass but the savings won't go far and I'd have a few year old camera instead.

Decisions decisions. Im tired of buyers remorse. I've stopped myself from pulling the trigger on all of the models previously listed because this is a lot of money to me and I need to get it right.

Amazon has the 50d at $1150 new. $985 seemed like a better deal when the best price I could find was $1299. What is the general consensus on purchasing used kit? Worth the extra to buy new?

I buy almost all my gear used now. If you can find reputable sellers on POTN or FredMiranda, you won't be able to tell it from new and you'll save a lot of $

After doing a little looking on both the recommended sites $985 is looking like a good deal for the 50D. Somebody just sold a body only 50d for $1100 and it had taken 500 shots.

Im off to jujitsu now, maybe I'll get some sense knocked into me and can make up my mind later tonight

Ive been scouring both sites. Nothing quite that cheap. May have found a couple. What shutter count should I be looking to stay under? This is my first Digital-SLR, moving over from 35mm.

if it's got under 10k actuations, you should be ok, so long as the previous owner(s) didn't beat on their gear. I know some guys on here have over 50k on some of their bodies, without problems (though regular maintinance.)
