I have been reading but i am all confused on what I need to do to get in shape. I have been told to HIIT. What will this do? I was a smoker for 7 years and I quit 3 months ago. I would really like to get in shape! What is cutting and bulking?!? I keep hearing about this everywhere! Also why does everyone use protein whey? I have a small gym in my apartment basement with a treadmill, bike and a full size work out machine. Suggestions? Please help!!!!

work out daily and I try to go to the gym 2-3 times per week. My main goal right now is my upper area, chest, arms and abs. My current daily ruitine is 300 bicycle situps, 60 swiss ball situps, 30 swissball push ups and 30 normal pushups. I have lost 30 pounds in the last 3 months and I am slowly gaining. My biggest goal is to get a 6 pack but I haven't noticed a huge difference since i started working out. (pic for reference). Does anyone have any recommendations on how to get abs and generally get in better shape?

Personally, I wish my neck/traps were thicker.

But 180-190 pounds is a "healthy" weight. So what Do i do now? My goal is to look good by summer. My biggest thing is is i want abs and thus have been doing crazy ab exercises with not much luck.

well you have no muscle. so if you wanted abs you'd have to drop lke 20 lbs. Bulk the get abs next year.

bmi exists to justify being skinnyfat, ignore it. Read the sticky up top, it explains everything.

what's the point of having abs if you have nother else to offer?

you need to bulk up and then worry about cutting down. I feel ya though, I used to have a six pack but lost it to the 8 month bulk I got going on now haha.

I know someone is about to scream at you soon about the crunches though... Yes, crunches do work out your abs, which then will promote muscle growth in your abs. However, doing crunches really doesn't help you lose body fat very well. So pretty much doing crunches will make your abs stronger and bigger but still covered in a layer of fat. So if you want to see abs, go running or some kind of cardio and eat lean.

You need to do squats and deadlifts, eat protien like it's going out of style, and forget about the 6 pack. Which is about the same thing everyone else regardless of their goals needs to do.

bulking isn't just getting fat, but fat is usually a byproduct. eating over maintenance calories and working out hard builds muscle and bulking just refers to the eating over maintenance calories part. eating a ton of protein is the fastest way to build muscle

to get the 6 pack, you need to cut your bodyfat, but you also need to make sure that there's something under the bodyfat, otherwise you're gonna look like a holocaust survivor...

you've got what, 3 months til summer? a lot can happen in 3 months, especially if you get on it now!

I'd say 190lbs at 3% bf would be good but its very hard to do that... chasing two goals at the same time is very difficult, losing weight and gaining muscle are almost on different ends of the spectrum. Yes, having more muscle does burn fat, but its hard to maintain that muscle on a diet that is helping you lose weight.

I don't consider AAS an option when I give advice.

but for his height, 190 lbs wouldn't be all that great unless he was at very low % bf. I'm 6'5'' and roughly 230 lbs and I'm not nearly as strong or big as I'd like to be and I don't consider myself overweight, I posted pics last week...
