Just found about this old abandoned meat packing plant in East StL and I wanna go, but a friend said he wouldnt go with me unless I had a gun. Im not old enough to even posess a handgun yet.

So what you think? 870 Express cased in the trunk, AR, or M1 Garand?

Also, need you to suggest equipment to bring
    I figure

    rifle/shotgun
    rope
    hard hats
    flashlights
    cel phone

    What else? :dunno:
Figured Id ask you guys since you came up with the best stuff for your bugout bags

what's the purpose if its going to stay in the trunk?

i, personally, wouldn't want to be caught trespassing w/ a firearm. if caught by police, fat chance you'll ever see it again.

Dont know who it would be trespassing against.
The packing plant left in 1966 and only real traffic that goes thru there are urban spelunkers

somebody has to own the property.

maybe the city seized it? if so, even worse.

i'd say just bring a couple flashlights, a couple chem lights, spare batteries, some radios in case you get separated, spare batteries for the radios as well, wear jeans and boots (preferably ones with lined soles in case of nails), a long sleeve pullover of a durable material (same reason as jeans, in case of glass), couple bottles of water, some beef jerky and the rope if you want to be like the boondock saints.

bring some OC if you have it too, couldn't hurt.

edit: cell phones as well. if you go missing, the E911 capability will be handy to find your bodies after homeless men anally rape and murder you.

I personally would take forcible entry tools and practice forcing doors and windows. I'd also take rappelling equipment.

But what exactly is the purpose of going there? Are you just going, "Hey, this is cool, let's walk around in here," or are there goals?

You should probably print and memorize this thread : http://forums.offtopic.com/showthread.php?t=3048204

in addition to what others have said
    - pepper spray
    - leather gloves
    - some good cut/laceration first aid.
    - eye protection

lol@"rapelling gear". If the stairs are impassable just leave. If you're rapelling in and someone gets injured its gonig to be a long night while the other goes for help. See thread posted above.

Its not as if we have some unexplored fronteir in the US anymore. Old abandoned buildings like that are like a lost city or something. Something just really interested about them that makes me wanna do this.

I always thought stuff like that was cool. I ised to explore in the old stove factory in town before it burned down.

I like camping, hiking, climbing and just plain exploring deep in the woods, so I figure it would be fun as hell.
Plus I can take a whole bunch of cool pictures and besides the decay and destruction, its basically as it was in the 60s. They never installed computers or high tech machinery.
Theres still a 2 story steam driven engine in there a few dynamos, and some other equipment.
I just think that stuff is neat

Brings me to another question. Is it worng to take small souvenirs from there? Part of me says yes, but the other part of me thinks some of that stuff will be too neat to pass up

Like some of the old readouts on the instrument panel. Im going into electrical systems in college and that stuff interestes me

Well, you're already trespassing so why not add theft to it.

No. Not worry about theft. Im not worried about getting caught

Just wondering if it wasnt right to take a whole bunch of stuff from there. Apparently guys that do this often have a big problem with people taking souvenirs and stuff. Like robbing a sunken ship
Just look what happened to the Titanic

Well, it's not "right" because it IS theft. It doesn't belong to you.

You are beyond stupid if you're voluntarily going to east st. louis. The state police won't even stop at stop signs there because they'll get shot at. Serious. EStL = bad. Your friend knows it, thats why he wants you to have a gun.

have a look at these forums... they seem to have most things sorted out
    http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/index.php

    i suggest;
take a camera with a good flash and megapixel count
    good thick clothes
    boots
and be prepared to run into some grumpy homeless dudes that dont want you wandering around "their" house
dont wear any weapons on your exterior too, because you dont want people to immediately think you're a threat

good luck, and i want pics

The "urbex" purists will have you thinking that you're supposed to leave everything as-is, since it's something that very few actually visit, and everyone wants to see the decay for themselves much as depicted in the photos everyone takes. Leave everything as-is; photograph the interesting small stuff if you'd like, since decay and delapidation scales down just as well as up.

Just remember, most "urbex" is tresspassing, and noone in any position of authority wants you there. Police will arrest you for trespassing, property owners will press charges, and it may not even be marked but you're supposed to know better anyway.

Also keep in mind that despite the fact that you're a mile from anything, your passage through the propulated hostile areas will likely not go unnoticed. Being armed may be better than being unarmed since it sounds like the place is isolated and the cops are hesitant to enforce order in that area... but if the place is truly a free-fire zone, why enter it knowingly just for novelty?
