My girlfriend is a photography major at Penn State (it's an inart degree with a focus on photography) She has a Canon digital rebel with the lense that comes with it (pardon my ignorance... i don't know a whole lot about them). But anyway... I want to get her a new lense for Christmas. She likes to take a lot of close up shots of stuff... but also far off landscape shots of mountains... cities during the day and at night etc. So I'm asking the OT pro's... which lense would work best for her? I'm looking at around a $200 budget if that's possible. Thanks a lot.

Do you have to get her a lens?

I already got her a good tripod. I didn't think about a flash... she always comments on lenses... that's why I was thinking lense.

I love you av by the way.

For that variety I'm thinkin either 50mm f1.8 or an 85mm f1.8. the 85 has the disadvantage of being, like, 4x more expensive, but it's a damn nice lens. Hell, you could get her a canon 50 f1.8 (which is like 75 dollars) and an OK bag to keep her stuff in, if she doesn't already have one. I'm trying to think of a nice 130 dollar lens, but I can't :( so maybe 2 50mm f1.8s? Or the 50 and an extension tube for the closeup stuff.

Get her a Canon 50mm f/1.8, and a set of extension tubes.

I looked at some reviews... and they weren't great for the 50 f1.8 but it is a $75 lens so what can I expect. I already bought her a nice bag.... it was a good idea though. Pineapple Devil has a sigma 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 for sale on here for right in my price range... would that be something that would be good for her or not?

Don't let the reviews fool you, the thrifty fifty is a terrific lens for the price.
Quite good wide open, and very sharp stopped down.
For under $100, nothing beats it.

If she's really gonna be a photo major, she'll regard the 28-200 as a joke :-\ sry, just the way it is. Fast, high-quality glass or nothin.

Makes it so you can get closer to an object to take the picture. Makes a 50mm lens a makeshift macro.

Can I give you a suggestion here? It might sound a little less personal or thoughtful, but if she is really going to be a photo major, any lens you end up spending $200 on she will eventually laugh at.

Put the $200 into a gift certificate or gift card or something like that and tell her what you wanted to do, but you wanted to make sure she got what SHE wanted and needed.

Trust me, as a professional photographer, we all have the stuff we want and we know better than anyone that is not a photographer what we want or need for our job. I would never want my family or SO to actually go out and buy something related to photography for me as they are so unlikely going to know what I need, I would feel awful when I didnt use it or wanted to return it toward something I could actually use. The thought would not be lost in a GC to me.

We are a finicky bunch and can be very picky and specific about what we use. Help her toward her goal, dont just waste your money on something she may or may not ever use.

On the other hand, i would not see that Sigma as a bad choice. It will do the job for her now, after all she is shooting with the kit lens wich is a POS for the most part anyway, and she can see it as something she can work with for some time before needing to replace it. I would hope she would still be able to see the thought in it and be able to get some good use out of it till she can afford the $1000 plus lenses we use professionally.

    Just some thoughts, good luck.
