OK what I want is simple... Forgive my ignorance...

    1 receiver
    HDMI in/out
    iPod dock and control option
Should i get 7.1 or 5.1 (does anything even use 7.1)
    Budget under $1000

I have an MK sub (VX-860 SF SuperFast Deep Bass) and Samsung HDTV, xbox360I use as a media center extender and likely HD-DVD when the add-on comes out. I'll be buying all new speakers accept for the sub.

I can't find shit! I've looked all over and have been reading this forum for a while.

Id worry more about sound quality over features/gadgets.
Id get something like the Outlaw Audio 1070.

If you do need all the bells and whistles, check out the pioneer eliete VSX-74TXi. You can find it on ebay new for right around 1k.

While I agree and always buy all of my gear from authorized retailers, lot's of people on OT are just looking for the best deal period. Japanese recievers (Denon/Pioneer) tend to be rather reliable. If the OP has a Magnolia hi-fi (or mini-mag inside a best buy) I have heard of a couple of people getting the Pioneer 74/72 series for a hefty discount. Also there is a couple of authorized retailers that will sell you it for a discounted/ebay prices over the phone.
