I'm starting college very soon and a family friend will be buying me a laptop of my choice.

    Things to take into consideration:

    Clear audio is very important.
I'd like alot of storage capacity (I maxed my 80GB on my current comp).
    I don't play video games.
I'd like something around 5lbs (less is better).
    I photoshop occasionally.
I'd like something that burns DVD's.
I don't want a rinky dink sized laptop.
Tablets are pretty cool, but not neccessary.
I'm coming from a 1.59gHz HP computer so anything will be an upgrade. :)

Most importantly, keep it under $2k.

    Thanks in advance!

Small, lasts 5+ hours, under 5lb, 120GB HD, and fast as hell (I got Core Duo, Core2 will be even faster), and wicked support.

    ib jellyogre starts sackriding asus.

anyone recommending a dell is a dipshit fucktard asshat douche-canoe.

    Asus/IBM/Lenovo/Apple.

I have yet to see someone recommend a machine better than one of those.

You can get just about anything for under 2g. I, personally would stay away from Toshiba. Apple if you can learn how to use a Mac isn't a bad move. Here's how that works...you buy a consumer level laptop and it'll have all the card slots, DVD, 16:9 screen and everything. You don't get all those options with a new business class (better) laptop.

    NC4400 - Check the specs

No care. All of your requirements say Mac, except that one. It says you are a slave to Bill Gates and his zombies.

An apple is the best thing out there for your needs. We're not in the business of telling people to buy crap, so maybe ask somewhere else?

No, I just started using them computers last week!!!!

This is hopeless... its like explaining to a PS3 fanboy why XBox 360 "owns more".

All I have to say is that I got a Dell laptop, and I am very happy with it, and the support that was provided. I didn't like the way the screen looked when I got it, I called, they built, and sent me a replacement within 10 days, but I decided to keep the one I had, because the "screen problem" was all in my head.

I cant comment on Asus, but I'll give Dell 2 thumbs up!

Well, good. You're one of the few people who have had success with Dell laptops. Dell and Toshiba make the worst laptops ever. Dell has a 26% return rate on laptops, which mind you is the highest return rate in the fucking industry. Surely, people have claimed after their Dell's have been repaired once or twice they're happy with it. :hsugh: Asus and Apple make the best notebooks right now, as far as stability, durability, and design.

Your logic there is seriously fucking sub-par. PS3 VS. XboX is probably the worst metaphor used to compare Dell and other notebooks in this forum.

Replacing HD < replacing entire laptop

I had a Toshiba before. No problems... except for the power port that came loose after about 13 months. Cost me $50 to get it fixed.

Well, you're fortunate, because Toshiba is legendary for overheating issues. They have constant cpu fan failures across all their laptops.

You're just about as clueless as the thread starter. You really shouldn't be giving advice.

Have you had any experience with the non-ThinkPad Lenovos yet? I'm interested in seeing whether they're the same quality we expect from a ThinkPad even though they don't have the IBM name attached to them.

I speak from experience. I had a Toshiba (which I sold to an OTer), now I got a Dell. Im happy with both.

Macbooks don't have a very clean record either. No laptop is perfect.

holy shit!!! this man speaks from experience!!!

Listen to him!!! he had a laptop from dell and a laptop from toshiba that didn't break on him!!! all toshiba's and dell's must not break then!!!

never mind the fact that dell's have a 1 out of 4 repair rate on the laptops and toshibas are riddled with problems themselves.

that is right ignore the statistics of 100s of users and switch to the statistics of o2!!!
