I'm trying to decide on either......

    Glock 19

    Xd9

    Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm

It's going to be for home protection and possibly ccw.

Try all 3, buy your favorite.

I have shot all three. They all have their benifits and deficits.
    IMO:
    Glock 19
Pros: Glock history, array of aftermarket accessories
Cons: Not as comfortable as some others

    XD9
Pros:the one I shot was pretty accurate
cons: some reliability issues (on earlier production at least)

    Smith and Wesson M&P9
Pros:Most comfortable IMO, a few configuration options (mag disconnect, etc.), true ambi everything
cons: little to no aftermarket accessories (specific ones, has standard piccatanny rail), mags are expensive

I think any of them would be good. I have an M&P9 and would easily trust it to protect me. I've put over 1000 rounds through, and not a single issue at all. I've run it dirty with nothing but the occasional barrel de-fouling for hundreds of rounds. It feels great, and shoots accurately.

My father has a Glock 17. It is a fantastic gun, and even though we have found ammo it didn't like to cycle (my M&P9 did with no problems), it is a great firearm. It is obvious why Glock has been the standard for so long that everyone else gets compared to. It isn't nearly as ergonomic as the M&P9, that is really the only reason I don't like it as much. The lack of ambi controls doesn't really make me think any less of it.

I shot an XD9 at a gun range once. I put 100 rounds through it without any problems. I don't have much more to say about it than that. It is in the price range of the other two.

Honestly, I think renting/shooting each one and finding which you like best is the way to go in this crowd. Any other them would be a good choice it seems.

I know I'm gonna get a lot of hate, but here it goes. Think about a Hi-Point? I have a C9 and while it's not the sexiest of guns, it does always go bang and the round always ends up where I aimed. For a college student on a budget, it's not a bad way to go.

If someone has the budget to spend a few more bucks and get a quality firearm, like this poster seems to, why a highpoint?

Glock. I just made my first sidearm purchase and after more than a year of seriously considering a purchase, I am fully satisifed that I made the right choice, given the caliber (.40 S&W) and price range (under $600).

:werd: If someone said they could spend no more than $200, then maybe... But if you can spring the $450-500 for a glock, then I'd say go for it. XD would be a 2nd place, for me... I just didn't care for the trigger-reset.

Thanks for the info everyone. I'm going to the range this weekend to test out all three and see which one I like.

I've got something like 8000 rounds through my XD9 without a single failure.

It goes bang 100% of the time and is accurate. Not to say the others aren't,
but that's my experience with the XD.

Fresno county allows you to CCW. I'm also waiting for my academy date for the dept of corrections. They allow you to carry of duty as long as you qualify every 3 months.
