it depends on the need. you get more zoom, smaller form factor and video with the s3is, versus higher resolution and the ability the use different lenses.

if you're just going to shoot with the kit lens on the d50, go with the IS

  6. D50 will be more expensive in the long run, more professional, and more difficult to use. If you don't think you're going to be really into photography just go and get the s3 IS.

Kinda weird hearing that from a canon guy right! :eek3: :)

errrrrrrrrr this is a question I asked a few months ago
but instead of comparins the s3 vs nikon d50, i asked about the S2 vs canon XT.

I went against what everyone said, I picked up the S2 because it was cheaper. I sold the S2 a month later

You if you're asking this question, then you should get the S3.
I'm not being an asshole either. If you're unsure whether you want a DSLR and the kind of commitment it carries with itself, then you're probably better off getting a nice P&S.

I am going with an S3 because

[1] It is far superior than others in its class.
    [2] Great P&S features
[3] I will be using the camera occasionally
    [4] Good price...got it for $438 on Buy.com
[5] This will last a while.

I had considered buying an S2, but for $80 more, S3 is worth it...

the only problem with D50 is the lens, the lens can be pricy, but ease to use, etc D50 is no harder to operate then any P&S. Set it to auto and shoot away
