I've taken film photography classes before, so I'm not a complete noob..I'm willing to spend up to $2k on gear, this is including body and lense(s).

I was thinking maybe 40D? As for lenses, I'm totally lost on a good choice..Help me out!

What do you intend to shoot? What do you need included in your setup? What are you going to do for lighting?

Ah christ. We need Canon backup in here.

Canons are win, you've already made the right choice, don't go letting any of these sirens tempt you with their unsavory wares.

Even my buddy that shoots canon loves how Nikons feel in his hand. He grabbed my D300 numerous times to take pics. :noes:

I should've taken a pic of him and blackmailed him. :noes:

I haven't fully done enough research on all models, but I am considering Nikons as well, they're not out of the question. The 40D seems appealing to me though for what it is, and where it's priced. Compared to something like the D80, it seems as though the Canon is going to offer me more. No, I haven't jumped ship to either side yet, I'm just weighing out the options :)

As far as what I'll be shooting...I have a couple trips in the near future to Spain, and possibly China, I would hate to not have a dslr in my hands by then. I do like outdoor photography, as well as still lifes. I'll most likely shoot sports with it as well (another reason why I like the canon, 6.5fps).

Sports always adds a lot to lens cost. For general photography the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 is about as much bang for your buck as you can get in a lens, other than then 50mm 1.8, of course. It'll let you do landscapes, portraits and general walk around snapshots.

Sports is more difficult, for outdoor sports and can easily get away with a Canon 70-200mm F4L, but if you want to go indoors you start needing the F2.8L version which costs just about as much as your 40D. The 70-200 F4L is probably the cheapest telephoto zoom I'd suggest you get, the other non-L glass Canon makes in that range is really awful.

I'd spend less on a body and more on lenses.

    :werd:

If you find a good deal on a used 30D you could possibly get the 70-200 F2.8L and the Tamron 17-50mm F2.8.

Here is what I would get...

    40D (or 20D or 30D)
    Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM
    Tokina 12-24 f/4
    Canon 70-200mm f/4 L
two 8GB CF cards (you said you'd be traveling. Always better to have a bit extra than not enough)
    Case
UV filter for each lens. Since condoms don't fit on lenses.

That's gonna cost more than $2k, but its an expensive hobby.

Flash, battery grip, mono/tripod are optional to start out. You'll eventually need some type of post production software.

Not having anything to shoot from 24-70 except a 50mm wouldn't cut it for me.

    Good list though.
