    Hey,
I'm looking on eBay for an external harddrive USB 200GB+ for my laptop. I've found a few but which do you think is the best. (Model v Price)
I'm thinking of the WD one as there a great make, but the top one is roughly double the space for £30 more. Cheers

    Maxtor 300GB USB (~£100) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BRAND-NEW-USB-External-Portable-300GB-Hard-Drive-UK_W0QQitemZ8794073083QQcategoryZ16178QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I'd buy a regular laptop hard drive and put it in this case:

In fact, I wouldn't just contemplate it, I did get a laptop hard drive and put it in this case. It doesn't need a power cord; very convenient.

Or, if you must have a full-size hard drive, buy a regular desktop hard drive and put it in this case:

I use a couple of these at work. They're all easy to set up, and both cases come in red, blue, and black.

:squint: would cost me more in the long run any way with shipping from you to me.

I don't want a laptop harddrive becuase they are more expensive.

If I buy the enclousure (for the 3.5" HDD) how does it connect?
Do I just plug the IDE cable from the HDD into the enclouser and then the USB to my laptop?

The external case has a short IDE cable that connects to the hard drive. Then, there is a USB cable that connects the case to the computer. You also have to plug in a power brick. Personally, that's too many cords for my taste. That's why I went with the laptop drive that powers itself through the USB cable. Much cleaner. Like I said, though, both sizes work well.

yes, the enclosure converts it to USB or firewire depending which you buy.

plug it in, it shows up in "my computer" as a removeable drive... very easy.

Serial ATA is not IDE. It's a whole new standard with different plugs that don't fit each other.

not a fan of maxtor drives... I'd stick with Seagate if possible. Western Digital as a last-effort.

I would not recommend purchasing a hard drive on eBay unless you know it is unaltered and within warranty, and you plan on immidiately pursuing RMA with the manufacturer.
