You can never outrun reality. You can ignore it all you want, but it's gonna come back one day with an overwhelming force.

Maybe you're feeling like shit not because that positive feeling has died out, but because you finally realize that your confident behavior was nothing but a hoax. You had friends due to the fact that you were portraying an image of yourself that was not you.:hs:

As for the thread starter, why are you shy?

From this corner, you have no reason to be shy at all. You got looks(just look at the competition and you'll see why) and you got brains, I assume.

i think i am shy because i used to be fat. so i always 'see' myself as fat still. :o

Then please take a closer look at your own picture. You are in no way, shape or form fat AT ALL. There is nothing about your body or on your body which looks remotely as "fat."

The problem isn't your physical image of yourself, but rather your mental state. It seems that your body has moved and changed to the better, but your mind remains in the past.

Hell, just compare your waist size from back then, to what you wear today.

For overcoming mild social anxiety i would suggest trying to focus less on yourself and more on others in social situations. It should ease self consciousness which could be a partial cause to your shyness/anxiety.

First, make yourself look approachable. Smile. Keep a good posture. Make eye contact with people.
If you find it too hard to just randomly go up to a person and say "Hi" or "How's it going", you could try commenting on something around you.
Talk about the weather, music that's playing, or maybe outrageous prices at the grocery store. :dunno:

BTW, you are good looking. I would try to put the past behind you and feel good about yourself as you are right now. :)

I have a few friends there in Madison. It's full of college students and fun people. Meet friends through friends! And don't be self conscious..what you may criticize about yourself, others don't even notice.

First, get into social situations you're comfortable with...such as people who share similar interests. Because if you try to socialize with really different people and fail, that will hit your self-esteem and you'll wind up less outgoing. So build from what you know first...then gradually test new waters.

Make a goal to talk to 5 new people a day every day for a week. They can be men or women, young or old. You need to get over the fear that someone is going to bite your head off if you talk to them and no one can help you with this but you.

lifting gave me the some confidence. It's achieving your personal goals in life that give you confidence and self-esteem in yourself because you did what you wanted. That reflects on top others and the chicks like guys who are directed. BTW SLO OWNS!
