This is what I was looking at. My next question is: Is there anything this computer will not do, or will not do well? Is it worth switching to Mac? If my budget is limited, should I up the hardrive or memory? Can I get a better computer for the money in PC? If so, which one would you recommend with around the same power, etc?

If I switched to a MacBook, would my current printer work with it? I really want a MacBook, but this is the only thing holding me back...

Don't know what kind of printer you have, but it is highly likely that it would. Macs are pretty printer-friendly. The printer is usb right?

If you're on a budget, I'd advise against getting the black (most expensive) one. I'd go for the middle option white model.

You will definitely want to upgrade the ram, but NOT from Apple directly (unless you like paying more than twice the price you could get anywhere else). Get cheaper 3rd-party ram instead. It would be a good idea to get 2GB, but Apple charges like $500 for that upgrade. You can get the same thing for $180 or less elsewhere. With 2GB ram and a 2Ghz Core Duo cpu, ...you can run PLENTY of apps at the same time.

My Dell Laser printer does not work on my mac, I have to route it through a windows workgroup to print.

That being said, Toshiba laptops are not shit, the satellite series is a great bang for your buck. They're not pretty or ultra-portaslim, but they have decent battery life, power, etc.

I have had 2 Toshibas, and 4 Dells. Nothing has ever worked as well as my MacBook, or been as easy and portable. I have a Canon Pixma MP500, on my Wintel machine I have to load software to make it work, on my Mac, I just plug it in and go. At work I have hooked to at least 4 different models HP printers with no drivers to install and no creating TCP/IP ports to connect to network printers. It is thinner and lighter than any other laptop I have owned, and it will go a good 4 hours on battery. I always had problems connecting to wireless networks with Dells, but never with this, my first Apple. I have only ever bought one laptop with my own money, but I am gonna pick up the mid-line white MacBook for my wife, as she is lusting after iPhoto and iMovie.

Dell intentionally cripples their printers to not work with Apples. Every other printer will work.

OMG, that was copy+paste right from an apple viral ad...

edit: Does it really sniff out the printers automatically? what if you're on a different switch?

That's what I figured... I've got a bunch of PC's running in the house so I just use one as a print server and it works fine.

Although I use my mac most at home and at work, I wouldn't wan't a mac laptop just because I've read so many mad things about heat, battery life, etc... Plus they're seriously over priced.

And I run windows on my mac - via VNCing into a dual pentium 4 system. :mamoru:

Well, I ended up getting the black mac I posted earlier. I ordered it yesterday and it shipped last night. It should be here tomorrow or the next day. And to top it off, it comes with a free iPod nano. Thanks for all of the advice from those that gave it.

Let me know how the black finish holds up. My black nano didn't fare well, and initial reports on black macbooks were not very good. But I wanna hear if they've fixed it or not... Hard for me to choose between a macbook or macbook pro.

How is it a hard decision? Pro. Just don't jostle it.
