I have a printer on my Windows desktop that I want to use on my macbook over my wireless network. I set the printer for sharing on my windows computer. I went to add the printer on my Macbook, I found the printer on the network, but it didn't have my printer in the list of drivers.

I found the Mac OS X driver for the printer and installed it but it still didn't show up in the list of drivers. Anyone know what to do?

    Edit: Its a Canon MP460.

I'm having the exact problem with a deskjet 5650. When I select the generic print driver, it just prints garbage. I think I'm going to get a usb print server and just say to hell with it

What I do is VNC into my Windows machine and then when I'm in Windows, I would then access my MB and print that file. It may seem stupid, but it works for me. :o

I have a wireless printer (epson) set up through an airport express. (router and printer are opposite sides of the house) It was a bitch to set up. At first it was printing 50 pages of garble. I ended up plugging it in via usb to print. After that, my mac "learned" the settings for the pinter. I was then able to print wirelessly using bonjor. All this took me hours to figure out.

Then i had to get the girlfriends vista laptop printing over wireless...:bash:

I've had the exact same issue, but at least with mine using the generic driver worked.

I dont know why when you install the driver on the mac it doesnt show up in the list of drivers, I have a Canon S820 driver floating around on the machine somewhere that obviously isnt in the driver list.

What I have done for the stubborn printers is actually use Parallels. It works great. You install the printer in Windows under Parallels just as you do on any Windows machine, it pulls the driver from the host computer and installs it perfectly. Then when I need to print, I open Parallels, drag the file onto the Windows desktop and print it through Windows and it works PERFECTLY.

    Try that.

You do have to buy Parallels of course, but its useful to have anyway.

I got Parallels already and its great. Looks like that is the only option. I mean its not that bad, Parallels loads up so quick for me. I'll have to do that unless someone else can figure out a way to get it to work in OS X

I had the same problem. You have to try and find the printer driver online somewhere, usually on the manufacturer's website. If you can't find it there, try google.

Does anybody know if you hook a printer to a mac, can you print to it from a windows comp on the same network?

yeah that isn't the answer because I have actually installed the driver and it doesn't show up in the driver list.

Just got off the phone with Apple after an hour and a half. The guy finally said he doesn't know how to do it (even after talking to his supervisor) and said if I find out, call them back and tell them.

Maybe you need to go see a Mac "genius."

I dont know if its really that. I think its more on the Apple end of things. When I install a driver for the printer, from the printers disk, why does it not show up in the list of drivers when I go to install the printer? That seems like a very basic thing that Apple needs to figure out. When I install it, it askes what drive to put it on (the main drive) but never asks where on that drive to put it and its obviously not in the list of drivers.

I've searched for it using spotlight and cant find it on the drive. It should be put right in the folder of all the drivers and show up on the list. It doesnt. This seems like a big mistake by Apple and needs to get fixed up. Its certainly not MS's fault as I can get the printer installed on every single Windows box in the house within seconds and even have it working on a Mac box through Parallels. its obviously the Mac OS causing the issue.

I also tried Canon support but unfortunately since the printer is out of warranty they want to charge for support so I cant find out what they have to say about it.
