:x:I just got my system installed a few weeks ago, and it bumps pretty good. But, I'm an audio freak, and I want better.

I bought two 12" Alpine Type-R's in a somewhat decent bassworx sealed box. To power them an alpine pdx 1.600 mono block. Not sure if that's enough power for the subs.

I have great stock speakers, but overall they suck, lol.

I also think I need a capacitor because my headlights are dimmer than normal.

My head unit sucks, it's a low-quality sony xplode.

As for the subs, I love the quality they deliver, but I wish they could hit lower. So I've been thinking maybe about buying a single 15" for the lows.

    Any suggestions?

I'm looking for quality on the level of about the Type-R's I got. Amazing sound, but nothing expensive.

    Hook it up OT! :x:

Try a ported box that will make a big difference.

Suggestions on specific brands for these?

I want to get a good 15" for lows, some 6x9's and 6 1/2's, a new head unit, and power and capacitors for everything. I dunno whats good.

keep the 12s, find a good box builder to build one for you. You WILL notice a difference.
And you call yourself an audio freak? replace those speakers/headunit!! and no cap for u

    Don't we all?

    That's plenty power.

Get rid of the factory speakers. Almost every $100 set of speakers out there will sound better...especially if you put an amp to them.

You are wrong, virtually no one needs a capacitor. Upgrade your ground wires in the engine bay (Batt to Chassis/Batt to Engine) as well as upgrade your power wire from alternator to amplifier to at least the same size wire you used for your amp power wire.

Yes, it does. Get a deck with higher voltage pre-outs.

Your twelves will hit plenty hard in a proper vented enclosure. There is nothing wrong w/ going to a 15....but I don't think it will help you here.

    See above

If you are hell bent on replacing the Type-R's there are TONS of good choices out there (dayton, reaudio, image dynamics, Zapco I-force, etc...)

Sounds like you are hooked up, just time to tweak on what you have.

Thanks for the tips. Great advice. You sure thats enough power for those? The subs are like 500 RMS each ( i think ) and the amp is only like 600 RMS. They sound just as good as the old subs my friend had, which weren't close to the quality of these R's. Is it really the box?

And also by the single 15", I meant ADDING one with another amp. Not replacing the R's. NO way.

    Also,

I didn't install it, cuz I have no idea how, but the guy installed it I don't think he ran any kind of power wire from my alternator to my amp.

I'm confused. Or maybe I just didn't notice him do that...

Well because you paid him to install just your sound system, to upgrade the electrical. THe poster was talking about the big 3 wiring upgrade which is different but very helpful for your electrical system

sorry, all i was trying to say was that the big 3 upgrade is not usually included in audio installations. Unless you request it.

It helps with your electrical flow it involves replacing your stock wires with larger wires usually 4ga or larger. You will get less voltage drops and dimming.
    These are the wires which you change;
    1) Alternator Positive to Battery Positive (optional fuse)
    2) Battery Negative to Chassis
    3) Chassis to Engine Block

    No problem

All the more reason to run ported/vented as they are more efficient than their sealed brethren

Yes, it is all in the enclosure AND the vehicle they are installed in (all other things being equal of course)

Bad idea. ALWAYS keep your subwoofers the same (same size, manufacturer, model, etc...) or you will run into sound cancellation/spike issues.

So if I want to hit low lows, should I just sell my 12's and buy 15's?

Absolutely not. 12's in a properly built box are perfectly capable of playing at frequencies lower than you can hear, so unless you are trying to communicate with whales, I don't think you will need to go bigger with the subs. Just build a proper vented enclosure (aka ported enclosure) and your system will sound fine and hit HARD.

no we already said your subs and amps were fine.

Change your box already! I think we have already told u to get rid of that bassworx box.
If you want lows tune your box lower(27-33hz). And make it larger to increase the efficiency.

If you still not happy, then upgrade your amp. If you start powering it over 1K make sure you know when you are pushing it to its limits or you will blow it!

    Alright just making sure.

I've also heard of a bandpass box. Is that what you're talking about, or are you talking about ported?

bandpass boxes were loud, one note wonders (for the most part). They aren't very musical, they are bigger than ported, especially if you want to go deep...and they require a bit of knowledge to properly construct and sound even halfway good. http://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/boxes.asp do a bit of research there on the different types of boxes, it will possibly help you understand a bit more about what we are talking about here:

WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD YOU WANT A BANDPASS BOX???????????????????????????? They are loud in their frequency ranges, yes...but they DON'T GO LOW very well, which is what you said you wanted more of...and to get low it will require a HUGE box. They also sound like crap 9 times out of 10.

I'm seriously beginning to think you are simply trolling this thread because you are not listening to what anyone is telling you. Ported is the best solution for you. Period. Type-R's respond well to ported enclosures. But hey, it's your money, blow it however you want!

My head is hurting.. Go to a knowledgeable box builder. Tell him everything you told us about you wanting it loud/low.
