It started yesterday when my Mail program wouldn't open... and now when I turn her on, I just get the taskbar at the bottom but no icons!

What can I do to fix this?

    1.25 GHz Power PC G4

    256 MB DDR SDRAM

I keep hearing a whirring noise - 3 'whirs' in a row then stop, then repeat.

Have you run repair permissions? It's in disk utility in the utilities folder.

hard drive is likely on it's way out.. open disk utility, highlight the boot disk and see what the "SMART Status" indicator at the bottom of the window says -- it may indicate that your hard drive is near failure.

I have 16 gigs available, so why would the hard drive be on its way out?

And how do I open disk utility if the computer crashes every time I turn it on?

it doesnt need to be full to break, it could just be a faulty drive or old or somthing

disk can break regardless of capacity like the poster above said. bearings wear out, heads start to skip, any of several mechanical things can fail in a hard drive. :dunno:

access disk utility by booting from a Mac OS X install disc.

OK, now this is weird. I tried buying it, gave Mac my credit card and all, and then five minutes after taking my info they called me back and told me that the system won't let them ship to the state of Florida :wtf:

I replied but never heard back from you

My iMac is still fucked. My Finder window won't open, and I don't have the install disc, just the install program loaded onto an external 2gig backup drive... but when I plug it in the iMac doesn't recognize it and thus doesn't run it.

    I need some serious help.

I did a search for "finder not running" and the articles Im reading have told to run FSCK by starting my computer in single user mode and then typing into the command line the following:

    /sbin/fsck -fy

But of course my Mac is not cooperative and won't open in single user mode, it also won't open my applications by pressing command shift A, so basically I'm fucked.

If someone could send me the install disc I'd really appreciate it. D/l'ing the disc doesn't help; I put it onto my 2 gig key chain but can't run it from there onto the Mac.

My keys are out of order.

The only way to get around this is to erase the hard drive and reinstall

Turned out my HDD was about to die, and the whir/whir/whir sound was that of my HDD slowly choking.

Got it replaced and upgraded to Tiger and bought another 512 megs, but the supplier sent a 1 gig stick instead and they gave it to me without charging me the extra :bigok:

However when they backed up my iTunes I lost about 200 songs :wtc: and that kind of sucked, especially because it was a few of my System of a Down and Radiohead cd's.

Awesome, the irony is that Mac sent me the install discs for Panther and now I'm on Tiger :mamoru:
