whats his price range? if he states a limit ask him if he extended a bit to get a much better woofer if he would do it or not

what are the goals of an upgraded sub woofer? what does he expect to get out of it?

how knowledgeable is he about home stereos?

has he had good luck with certain brands hed like to stay with?

is he comfortable with ordering online or is he certain he wants to buy in store only? not bad either way but will effect things

we have had a massive sub for a while which we use in our theatre room.. its about the size of a 3 car garage if not a little bigger.. we had like 2 10"s i think which just recently went out

this would be first new sub he has gotten in a while.. i dont think hes tryin to spend more than 6-700.. and he basically knows the basics i think, not too much about subs though

sounds like your theater room is pretty big, ive never personally heard SVS but have heard good things, i own a HSU, like it a lot, im getting 2 more in the future as my next sub upgrade, my current nne just doesn't get intense enough for me, it cost me about 430 and my room is ~4000 cubic feet and its L-shapen with 10 foot tall ceilings, the 2 replacing this one are going to run me 2 grand combined, ideally if i was your dad id consider stretching to 1k, it will open up some really nice sub options like this:

i like a lot of intense bass though, a vtf3/2 mk3 should prove to be adequate for your room, if you click the loudness level image it takes you to an image explaining what size room they are good for
