I have a large, hard sided, lockable case which will have my two rifles and one pistol inside. Below I bolded the part of the policy I'm kind of confused on. Are they going to give me shit if I have 2 rifles and a pistol in one case rather than a separate case for rifles and pistols? It doesn't seem like it would be a big deal, but I'm not sure.

I've never traveled with my guns before, sorry for the noob confusion :hs:

Their policy as copied from delta.com:

Maybe they'll just charge you the excess baggage fee they have listed below? :dunno:

I'd call and find out or something, airlines and guns are something I wouldn't want to take a chance on, they're notorious assholes in this area.

I can't see where they would have a problem with it, except maybe to assess an excess baggage charge for the pistol. Post this on GlockTalk and see what you get. I don't fly anymore, and when I did I flew with my M16A2 in hand :o Those were some SAFE flights, let me tell you. :mamoru:

Yeah that's what I would think, I don't really care about extra fees I just don't want hassled.

I suck at reading, the page with the policy says to call their Reservations line if you have questions. What a painful call that was  But she said it will be fine to have two rifles and a handgun in one case.

Anyone able to confirm? I'm probably overanalyzing, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

the only time i flew delta. when he asked me to open my case, i told them i did not feel comfortable opening and exposing a firearm in a airport. he was fine with it and told me tsa may require me to open it. but from there on i delta wasnt seeing it

Just tell them you have firearms in the case. They'll give you that paper you have to stick in the case. TSA may want to inspect to confirm its unloaded, that happens to me about 50% of the time. The other half of the time they just take my word for it.

Nope. Very straightforward. The rifle case will obviously count as one of your bags. And obviously it has to be locked. Basically it's just a locked, hard-sided suitcase.

Well that was easier than I thought it was going to be :o

Walked to ticket counter, ticket guy said "firearm?" i said "yes", signed the "i promise my weapons are unloaded" tag, brought case down to different part of counter, waited a minute for a TSA guy to come down, opened case for him, he wiped it to check for explosives, closed case, locked, done.

I got scared when I got to Houston though, my case didn't come down the baggage carousel. They paged me (after i waited for the rest of the bags to come down  ) and it was waiting for me at the Service Desk.

Why would they wipe down a gun? There's gonna be some sort of explosives residue or something I'd think.

On a side note. Delta "lost" my friends M60, 2 M16s one with an XM148, and an M79. Turns out they just didnt make that plane he was on....

Comforting to know TSA is still on the ball. A case that has ever held ammunition or a slightly dirty gun will test poz for explosives.

We get pulled everytime they random wipe our backpacks cos we've used them all to carry ammo to the range.

Yeah I thought the same thing, but it's a brand new case that's only held fairly clean guns and a box of unopened ammo. They only wiped across the hard plastic inside, underneath the foam :hsughno:
