I have a second-hand computer (with XP) on which I can not install either Office 2000 or 2003. When trying 2003 I get an error with a .dll file. When trying 2000, it tells me there is a problem with the disk, and to put in the Service Pack 1 CD. Any ideas?

Which *.dll files, most aren’t particular to the system and you can just download it from somewhere...

Yes, they've both been installed on other computers. Also, the .dll file is Vbac10.dll. On my work computer, it is located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VBA\VBA6.

What is the error that you get regarding it?

You may be able to just copy if over from your computer to the other computer.

If it says it can't copy the file, it sounds like the disc is damaged.

It's pretty uncommon for a MS product to fail to install because of a missing DLL. They usually include anything it might need with the installation media. Every time I've had an error like this with an MS product, it's been because of corrupt media (in my case a bad batch of MSDN ISO images). Another possibility is that the CD drive you are using is faulty and causing read errors. You might want to try swapping it out and trying again.

Of course, it is also possible that machine is just fux0r'd

I did a little research, and several places made it sound like the CD is screwed. However, neither my 2000 nor my 2003 disk would install, so I figured it's something else.

You could always try copying the disc to the HD first

I hadn't thought of that. I'll give it a try tonight. Thanks.
