    hey guys,
I have been contacted to shoot the pre-olympic games hockey tournament on thursday and i'm nervous as hell. I have not shot hockey AT ALL before and quite frankly I straight up suck behind a camera.

Anyways, a women contacted me about taking pictures of her partner and the deal is she got me a press pass and will be reimbursing me the fees to rent a canon 300 f/2.8 to go along with the 70-200 f/2.8 i already have. I just give her the images that I take of her partner.

she found me on craigslist in case you are wondering

any tips would be greatly appreciated

Why would you even accept a job that you are not confident or, for that matter, have NEVER shot before? Doesnt make much sense to me. And dood, work for free? C'mon...

well i think it is a good opportunity for me because there is no other way I would be able to go to an event or venue like this. The photos that I owe to her are just the pictures of her partner, the rest of them are mine to keep.

She was quite fair with me, she told me she would shell out more if i showed her a portfolio of shots that I have done in the past. Since I have no real portfolio it is difficult for me to ask for more. I explained to her clearly that I am not the house photographer and I do not have strobes so she cannot expect the same quality.

Correct me if I am wrong but, from this job he will get valuable experience. For that reason + the fact that he's very new to shooting the subject, I think shooting for free to be reasonable.

Its not a big deal b/c the OP isn't looking to become a pro anytime soon.

But in the real world, you get one, maybe two chances to put your name out there. People remember when the spotlight swings over to you, and you reveal yourself to be hopelessly amatuerish and botch the gig. Work offers dry up fast.

But if you're not looking to become a pro and establish a legit rep as a solid go-to man...feel free to bump around all you want. Plenty of fishies on Craigslist looking for freebies.

exactly, im not looking to become a pro overnight and I am not expecting that after this all sorts of people will be knocking on my door asking me to shoot the olympics for them. I'm only one year into photography and my work is definietly not worth much at this point. It is all learning and experience for me.

haha but that was a 400
this is only a 300 much shorter and lighter
im sure my 30D's tripod screw can carry a 300 2.8
i thought the mount on the bottom was just a second handle

needless to say, im pretty stoked to play with the 300, it'll be cool as hell to play with it
