My daughter's first birthday is soon and I'm working on her invitations. We decided to try a little photo shoot for her invites.

I made this thread last week. Bought two of these, only 150 watt instead of 250. I couldn't find any white flame retardent cloth for diffusing. And since they're 150 watt I just used the bare bulb.

Just took some photos. Go easy on me please, this is my first time trying this..

I'm not satisfied with them at all. Should I have bought the 250 watt lamps? Looked worse with white balance on auto, these are after I put WB on tungsten.

Anything I can do to make these better?

WTF. My automator action didn't run right. Should've been resized. Oops.

And I just realized I accidentally chose blurry shots. Oops again. I have too much to do and can't resize and pic new ones. Sorry.

Still, any constructive help I can get from you guys would be great. Thanks.

it's hard to give you good advice without the exif data... But here are a few general things to work on:

move her and the lights away from the background, use a longer focal length, a bigger aperture and keep the shutter speed to 125th or faster.

You'll also always want to focus on her eyes

Focus? Fix your white balance? Use a shorter lens or get further away so it has breathing room? Use a less annoying background? Control the light better because you're getting wicked nasty "wet" highlights and no facial definition?

Honestly, and you'll notice I've either been not posting or toning down my negativity when I do, but there is nothing about this shoot I like.

when i take pics of my son (he's 10 months this week), i try to keep the shutter speed around 1/200th. this also happens to be the max sync speed for my cactus flash triggers. :o

the focus and white balace has already been mentioned and you can correct the color using curves in PS cause I there is a shift going on. But for me there is just too much purple going on. is the background purple on white or purple on lighter purple? plus teh outfit is purple and the feather thing is purple. just overdone I thinks.

Unfortunately, all I have to work with is the 350d and kit lens. I shot this in P mode. Should I try it in Tv or Av? I obviously won't be too good in full manual.

I wonder why the EXIF data isn't there. It's usually there when I export JPGs from Lightroom.

I know what most of that means, but I'm not sure what you mean by "user a longer focal length."

    My thoughts

Move away from lights and background
    Use longer focal length
Use a faster shutter speed - most of the pictures are blurry...
    Also set the WB manually

isn't that what I said!?!? get out of my head!! :noes:

    :bigthumb:

Longer focal length = shoot as zoomed in as you can. You said you have the 18-55, so shoot all of your shots at 55, even if you have to move the camera back to get there.

Longer focal length = shallower depth of field = nicer for portraits.

also, since you're not comfortable with manual yet, shoot in Tv, set the shutter speed to 1/200th, turn the strobes to their strongest setting, and let the camera fill in the aperture.

This exact scenerio is why everyone should have a light meter, btw.

the backgrounds kinda distracting. it's too similar to what she's wearing. how about a white background? have you checked out tit's flickr site for ideas?
