My resting heartrate is about 72 (I just checked it sitting at work right now).

After I do a set of squats, regardless of if it's a warmup with 135 or if it's close to my 3RM, my heartrate is always like 180-200. Is that normal? I know cardio gives you a high heartrate, but does one set of lifting weights, too?

It's like running sprints. You build an oxygen debt that needs to be taken care of.

I usually need to sit down for a minute to just breath after a heavy set of squats. I need to do more cardio too.

i was going to make a thread about this earlier but I forgot...

basically i did heavy DL's and Squats yesterday and I nearly threw up after each set... Part of it I'm sure was the fact that I had drank two nights in a row previous to that afternoon, however I still feel similar on days where I haven't drank recently and do heavy DL's or squats...

lifting is (usually) a more intense activity than most cardio (HIIT and other interval training/sprints aside), so it should produce a higher heart rate... at least a higher peak (obviously cardio is going to sustain a higher HR)

Could indicate some sort of cardiac insufficiency, but if you aren't having any symptoms (dizziness, light-headedness, nausea, etc.), you're probably ok (for now). The legs are well vascularized and have a high degree of venous capacitance, so it's normal to have an increased heart rate to maintain adequate cardiac output in the face of metabolic vasodilation.

I am pretty sure forcing yourself to try and stand up and walk around would be better for ya.:hs:

I think a lot of it is the fact that during heavy squats I tend to hold my breath so core stays stable... and holding your breath while doing some heavy ass shit using the biggest muscles in the body = causes really high heart rate and loss of breath.

i've been trying to focus on it more lately...

but my body mechanics sucked balls until more recently (still do, but i'm getting a lot better) so when I squat and DL I really focus mostly on form (pelvic tilt, keeping core tight, balance, looking up, etc) and my breathing just does what it naturally wants to do...

I have notice lately since I'm trying to do higher rep squats some of the time that I do need to work on my breathing. It's easy to do when I'm going for 8 reps but when i'm doing a 2RM or something it's really not on my mind.

yeah, i hear that... i have to make a conscious effort to breathe when i'm lifting sometimes, but imo it makes a big difference (for higher rep stuff, that is)

for squats, i breathe in when i'm standing up, hold it until i bottom out, and exhale on the way back to the top

Sounds like it's pretty normal then. Thanks.

Except I wanted to reply to this part:

I never do cardio. Never. I'm too much of an ectomorph and I like lifting weights too much. So, while being thin and having very low bodyfat, I am literally in TERRIBLE cardio shape. I probably cannot run a mile without stopping. I always assumed it was somewhat related to this, but if this seems like it happens to all of you guys, too, then I think it's probably pretty normal.

I used to do KB training but my new gym doesn't have KBs. That was kind of like cardio. Kind of.

Doesn't have to be KB, you can do plenty of stuff with DB or BB.

Power-cleans get my heart rate going wild. I should test it one day to see where it is after a few touch sets.
