i have a cmoy headphone amp i made a few years ago. it has leads for a 12v power source. its ok quality, adds a little hiss
it does boost up the sound quite nicely. some say it adds to the bass also. its good for headphones that require a high amount of volume to get working. 80 ohms or so. if you want it, let me know, i'll let it go for cheap

So do you gain anything on your normal cheap/mid headphones?

yes sir! planning to upgrade to a better tube soon too. got a few recommendations from the head-fi peepz. stock tube definately gives the bass an extra kick tho.

Also just finished building my CMOY amp, due to capictor size problems and the way i originally mounted them, i had to opt to put it in the only thing that fit laying around....tupaware container

my latest setup will allow for 3 listeners at one time using the same source. I have also since upgraded to some higher end headphones since originally posting which require an amp as a simple ipod out wont do either phones justice and even enough volume. Sitting next to the amp is a Maverick D1 DAC in which i have connected to my denon SACD/DVD-A player & computer. The case is off because i just changed the tube in that for the analog pre-out

I just picked up my first pair of "real" headphones, audio-technica AD700's. SOooo comfy and sound pretty decent. I have a decent sound card and am running my computer through an old stereo receiver and then to my phones. Realistic STA-18B receiver if anyone knows anything about them, i don't. Always heard amps are good for headphones, but since i've always gone through the receiver i've never tried unamped. Cool project to DIY though!

Oh, and now half my music collection sounds like shit from low bit rates. Never thought i'd be able to tell the diff between 128kbps and 320 or so.

haha! Ya amps with those phones will make a marginal difference probably only affect the bass & might be barely noticeable....i have the AD700 as well, its one of the 4 i own now. Now im building another amp, its goign to be much nicer then the tuppaware amp. just so busy working, its been hard to get it done.

Headphone junkies: is there some music mastered for HiFi headphones instead of stereo systems?
