i know this may be a stretch, but with today's technology, this item can't be too far fetched, right?.....

I was wondering if there was a way or perhaps a program/cord that could hook up to an internal HDD that would also plug into your HDD and maybe come up as a viewable/transferable HDD like an external does. I have a HDD from my old computer taken out and was just wondering if there was any way to somehow hook it up like my external is hooked up to get files off of it other than hooking it straight up to the computer and trying from there....

:o :o sorry if that's too crazy of an idea or i'm just a 'tard

External hard disks are just internal hard disks inside shiny metal boxes. You can buy an enclosure for $20-50 on Newegg.com, and put your old hard disk inside it.

I recommend Vantec brand; they look nice and I've bought several without any DOAs.

thanks for the heads up :o I never knew they were the same, I figured there was some drastic difference between them. I'm not really looking for a case, I'm just looking for a cord to hook up to the old internal to get some stuff off of it. I have some pictures and music on the old drive and don't want them to be lost for good.

you're not going to find the cord without the case, too.

    google "external disk enclosure"

they're sold for all types and sizes of drive.

it's what I use when I need to bring files from home.....200gig USB drive is WAY more convenient than burning CD/DVDs

Seriously, having an external hard drive is extremely useful. You won't regret the purchase.

    I stand corrected.

But I'd rather carry one enclosure with one USB cable than this. It wouldn't be long before I'd lose one of those and then the rest of it is trash.

this may be more useful to you if you just want to plug in a hdd and do what you need instead of taking the time to put it into an enclosure for just a temp transfer.

probably out of your budget if you were just looking for a cable, but i've seen these on sale on fatwallet.com and slickdeals.net... i believe radioshack had them on sale.

i wouldn't use those ide/sata to usb, ac adapter to molex kits. i know the pc hardware support guys said those kits fried some drives as the power adapter didn't regulate the power correctly. they haven't had any issues with the blackx docks.

Its handy to pull data off a drive after the mobo crapped out, especially when you aren't sure if the drive is PATA or SATA.

I'm not carrying it around though, all the accessories sit in a drawer when I'm not using it.

I've got a backpack as a "mobile office" so it's easier to have an enclosure.

    That is neat though.
