$299 gets you a brand-new Remington 870 Express Magnum with 18" barrel and mag-tube extension. It's a great HD starter built on the most reliable shotty out there.

Maverick is made by Mossberg, it's not a bad gun for the cash. If her budget is under $200, it's a fine choice.

Mossberg. Everyone seems to be happy with them but me. Just make sure it doesnt have an eleventy pound trigger like mine

Fine for strictly home defense use, if your planning any aftermarket stuff then move upto a moss500 or rem870.

Can you shoulder a full size shotgun well? Many women seem to prefer the youth models.

Got one of those loaded up with 00 buck myself in the event of zombie or goblin infestation. Bought it with a 28" barrel and added the 18.5" barrel for HD usage. It's been through a few hundred rounds at the trap range without complaint. Probably a good choice if it's not likely to see any accessories.

I've see longer-barrel models at wal-mart for $165, but they're no longer listed on the website. Given that the 28" barrels sell for about twice what the 18.5" barrels go for, I'd expect the 5-shot "security" model to sell for less.

    I can..:dunno:

I was looking at youth models as an option for my girlfriend though. Think a 20 gauge would be better? 00 Buck out of a 20 gauge should still be effective...

Maybe get a regular 500 and a bantam stock for it.

I've been keeping an eye out for a slightly used Winchester 1300 Defender.
