I've setup a Debian Etch server in vmware on my PC. I want to be able to ssh in from my mbp both from internally on the network and externally through the internet.

Installed VMWare on the pc, installed Debian, setup a static IP. I forwarded port 22 to the static ip of the virtual machine, and installed ssh on the server.

Fired up terminal on my mbp, and I get "Network is unreachable" error.

Any suggestions on things I should try first?

..forwarded port 22 to the static ip of the virtual machine??

From a firewall or something?? Can you ping the VM from the host and vice versa?? I bet you used the wrong type of network setup when you created the VM ... I know I did on my first few attempts.

OK, I think I figured it out.

Problem was that the VM eth device wasn't properly bridged to the physical device on the PC. I went into the network settings for VMware and corrected this, rebooted the virtual machine, and bingo. I'm in.
