    Glock : We're releasing a new .45 load.

    Everybody : Why?

Glock : So we can penetrate markets where military calibers are banned.

    Everybody : Oh, okay.

I've found a bunch at my range. Pisses me off to no end to try to sort between it and ACP.

I got a good chuckle this morning, I had opened and not read the second link (where it says the ammo was speer gold dot.) Then this morning the first thing I do was read this thread and check my email, apparently less than 10 minutes before this was posted, I got the Natchez flier email . . . trying to sell 15 different types of gold dots.

This. The department probably got them for maybe $200/unit, maybe less after trade-ins of their old guns.

That kind of thing is real attractive to police administrators when they go to justify their expenditures to the city council. So the ammo costs another couple dozen bucks per case, so what? that's figured in as a recurring expense anyway, and if it means they trim annual ammo purchasing by a case or two, not so big a deal.

Personally, I can't wait for my department to retire and sell off our current G22C pistols. I'll buy mine...then get a non-ported barrel for it.

I was shooting with a few Pennsylvania state troopers this weekend and their duty weapons are now the .45GAP. They agreed that it had to be a cost per unit decision.

that kind of thing usually is, and it's usually an absurdly good deal to the department, too.

years ago in the next County over, the Sheriffs dept switched over from glock to S&W... because a City cop didn't like the gap, in his personal owned glock... they got a hell of a deal on the S&Ws, with the trade-in glocks from what i overheard.

Any round that would kB a glock to that extent would be even worse in a metal gun.

I kind of wonder I've kB'ed 9 major rounds because of a weak recoil spring that unlocked the gun too early and all it did was shoot the mag out the bottom and give me a good wack in the hand. This is with a hot compressed load in 9mm. If a 45 gap is kB'ing it must me even more volitile. Something near a double charge. I am not framilar with 45 gap loadings but those speer gold dots 45gap pressures have to be through the roof.

I've seen all manner of case failures and it just does not have enough pressure unless you have double charges, or leaded barrel to really up the pressure.

afaik, the GAP is about the same pressure as a ACP. (~20k) Not terribly high compared to 9mm/.40/.357

And Glock does indeed give them away. NY, PA, GA, and SC all got guns, seed ammo, and holsters in exchange for their previous sidearms to switch.

Glock gets their baby out on the professional users market, and they make up some of the loss by reselling the old guns the agencies traded in, usually overseas.
