I often contemplate living in Japan because I love it there and have family there, but obviously I'd have to support myself somehow. I was just thinkin' it'd be neato to have all the equipment you need at your fingertips as well as bein' the man/woman in charge somewhere you'd be happy.

Anyway...how 'bout y'all? Where would you want to own a gym?

Sub-thread: In all you brolies' humble opinion, what would you say is a respectable deadlift for someone 5'6" at 140 lbs.?

i've contemplated opening one around here for a while, but i doubt many people would want to go a gym where the owner is weak as hell :mamoru:

I was considering a small one just for personal training. But too much work.

A friend of mine owns one... doesn't seem to be worth it, financially IMO.

It's going to be hard to open a gym in Japan. Land isn't cheap and gyms tend to require a bit of space.

I don't know what your net worth is and how much is liquid but you'd probably want atleast $100,000 up front and available with assets available to take out a sizeable loan for the equipment. Catering to the "cardio" crowd will probably be your best bet for success.

a gym full of cardio equipment, weight lifting machines, and a small section for free weights will probably net you the most bucks.

I know alot of gym owners and they all say that if you want to make money then don't open a gym. I would like to have around a 2000sq ft gym just for me and my training partners.

I think it's around 1200 sq ft. If it were my place though, we would only have about half of the people that are there now.

starting a gym is not a good thing. a friend of mine is the APF vice president (Russ Barlow) and he thrives on other people starting gyms. they dump a shit load of money into em then have to auction off all of their equipment for a fraction of what they paid for it. Russ goes to the auctions when he need snew equipment

because you drop 1-200,000 into the gym... then get 10 people to sign up. then LA fitness/Ballys/Golds/etc runs a special and they leave.

then you have 200,000 dollars worth of equipment collecting dust
