This was the month that both of my camera's reset their file counters from taking so many pics. :( I need more storage space.

UCSD's new Chancellor Mary Anne Fox was officially inaugurated at the beginning of the month. Our old chancellor, Bob Dynes is now the president of the entire University of California. The ceremony was done inside Rimac arena where the lighting was pretty much coming from a bunch of small tungsten lights, which is not fun.

I felt lucky to get something for print at 1/100ish @ 200mm ISO1600/3200.
When you don't have IS or VR, you have to be clever...

Almost everything I've been doing has been indoors, so I had forgotten what it was like to shoot with the blessings of natural light.

Outdoors, the light was like this:

The editor of UCSD's the Koala humor/whatever/irreverent newspaper, Steve York aired some self-made pornography on Koala TV, a program that runs on Student Run television broadcast across the campus television network. He got in some trouble with the student government that funds SRTV. The local news and even national news picked up on it pretty quickly as they were able to work in the buzzwords of students and sex.

This is Steve outside of the hall where the student council meeting discussing this matter. He's a great entertainer.

I went to the next taping/airing of Koala TV, where something big was supposed to happen -- We were supposed to get strippers or girls to come down from the dorms to strip, but the company with the strippers bailed out.

... so Steve got naked on air and the station manager pulled the plug on the show.

This was the funniest thing I've seen in a while.

Student Government elections are coming and I got pulled into shooting some impromptu portraits of one of the presidential candidates. This guy is Daniel Watts, I believe he once got a college tv network on campus shut down for airing or trying to air an Iraqi beheading video last year. He's appeared on wheel of fortune and ran for governor of California last year. He lost to Arnold by A LOT, but he probably spent fewer dollars per vote than Governor Schwartzenegger did. He's running as the head of the Sungod party/slate, one of the icons of UCSD. The statue in the background is the Sungod.

We had our first home track and field meet at UCSD that wasn't rained out. It was overcast all day. Pretty much the lighting was nice and even everywhere, no harsh shadows, but still it was overcast and a bit dim.

The long jump event is really fun and intresting to shoot.

This is Katie Hogan, she was also one of the senior star athletes from UCSD's Women's Volleyball team. They were nationally ranked as second in the nation for NCAA D-II women's volleyball at the beginning of the 2004-2005 season. They were awesome all year.

Another photographer let me try out some pocket wizards for a remote setup during one of the hurdles events which I tried for one heat but didn't really get anything. It is definitely interesting to use and something to look into. A remote camera is definitely going to take a lot of timing and a lot of luck.

This is Heike Seiner from Point Loma Nazerene University. She's been awesome at all the track meets I've seen her at. She's ahead of the competition by a few inches at least and is the last one standing. I think she's still trying to clear a jump of 5'11 in competition.

The end of the quarter came mid-March, and we had a concert before finals week.

The Mad Caddies and Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies played. I'm not sure who the opening band was :happysad:

It's not very fun shooting a concert on a low stage.

This was from the second home meet, and it was time for something different.

It was San Diego sunny and there were the occasional hot spots and it could get very annoying if you weren't careful with your exposures. There are also butterflies everywhere, but you can't tell in the pictures.

Runners generally make for boring pictures unless you get them at certain spots and some events just don't make for very good photogenic people.

This is Kendra Canape. She was also on the UCSD women's volleyball team as one of the starting seniors and is awesome at anything she competes in. She has this funky ritual of bending back right before a jump.

This is Mimi Hodgins. She does the distance running events and pretty much dominates the 800 and 1500 runs. She won both events at this meet and seems to be breaking a few records.

UCSD's men's volleyball team finally won their first game after a nineteen game losing streak. NINETEEN. I started the school year shooting the women's volleyball team which was one of the best teams in D-II volleyball, and I applied a different style to these.

This was the first game after breaking their losing streak and they played against USC's men's volleyball team. They played well and doubled their win total here.

I used long lenses here and shot from far away, which is very different from the techniques I applied to the women's games. I'll post some pics from earlier in the year so you can see how different pictures can look.

I'm still a bit iffy on whether or not I like using long lenses here.

... and here's what I mean by different.

Telephotos give you a fake sense of closeness. Things can look close -- but you aren't -- and your pictures will generally be flat and the same feeling of depth just isn't there.

Sometimes you have to use a telephoto because you can't get physically close, but when you can get near, do it.

The downside to shooting from the ground is getting faces. It's hard to do and generally doesn't happen -- Then again, you don't have to get faces to make a good picture, but they have to be GOOD.

This is Bonnie Wilson. She was one of the senior starters and a great outside hitter. This is my favorite volleyball picture that I've shot.

This is Teresa Ohta, one of the best setters / defensive specialists that I've ever seen. She got most valuable player of the year and a ton of other awards, national team spot, etc... Awesome.

    Getting after it.

Coming back from the men's volleyball game, I heard and found a band that was practicing in one of the lecture halls.

We did an impromptu shoot for fun, and I had compact flash to burn.

A classroom would make for an intersting setting for pictures or a music video.
The light in a lecture hall isn't so good, but there is just enough.
