So it's about time to really start thinking of what branch I want to go into once I graduate and they annouced AFAST testing soon so I figured why not.

We got a practice test that seems somewhat involved, but many questions are similar to the style given on the ASVAB like mechanical diagrams etc.

So has anyone taken it and passed? What do you think about Aviation as a branch.

    Thanks.

I do not understand this question, if it is a question.

brackac and myself have both taken it and passed. We both chose the warrant route though because in my own beliefs being an aviation officer sucks my left nut. The test itself is just as much a psych eval. as a real test. I took the test many years ago so if you want an idea what its like now then you'll have to talk to brackac.

Being a warrant, aviation is the greatest thing ever. you get to fly, enough said.

Burton, yea I noticed a lot of personality type questions on there. for instance, 'did you enjoy going to school dances?' or 'Acid rain is one of the most serious environmental problems facing us today, do you agree?'

So anyways, why does being an aviation officer 'suck your left nut' so to speak? How does being an aviation officer differ from being a warrant, besides rank and attached responsibilities to that rank?

being a warrant i get to fly all the time my entire career. if you plan on making a career out of it, you pretty much stop flying at MAJ. You will fly your hours, but nothing more than that normally. Thats why it sucks my left nut. I'm here to fly a helicopter not fly a desk.

It's already been said that the AFAST is mainly a psych eval. Answer from a standpoint of a team player that is outgoing, but not dangerous, and has good leadership/followership qualities. The other questions are covered in study guides. If you are comfortable with instrument comprehension, cyclic orientation, and understand the concept of the complex manuevers portion of the test, you will be fine. Go to your local boxstore and pick up a AFAST study guide.

Pilots don't maintain the aircraft silly. :slap: That is what the crewchiefs are for. Probably for the best also. The minute a pilot came across something shiny in the engine bay the pilot would pause to check his hair.

I know that, what I am saying is that he would get more hours flying a desk instead of some boring aircraft. Flying is all about hours right?

Black Death sounds too nerdy. Try Iceman, or Big Dick, or Hairy, or Jyokker.

so other than the fact that you can't fly once you hit major, which in 8yrs I won't achieve, what are the downsides?

    Being gone. A lot.

You are also on flying status, and are very limited to the medications you can take.

Its not that you can't fly, its that you only get to fly your hours, and the the rest of the time you are the battalion staff bitch. and in aviation you can make MAJ in 8 years. In regards to the downsides, i guess it all comes down to personal preference. Myself being a CW2, I go sit in pre-flight, then i go fly. There is no planning done by me, and i like it that way. Its just typical officer bullshit just like any other branch, except instead of NCO's, you have warrants to do all the work.
