I am in the process of attempting this transition, but my unit is giving me a hard time because we're deploying in early 2010... Has anyone here had any luck doing it? I am in a hell of a financial bind

why try if you are going to be deployed? You are on active duty when you deploy. Doubt your going to be able to get out of your unit while they are on alert

You have to get a 369 and 4187 completed from your commander releasing you from your unit. It is possible, but it totally depends on whether you can get released from your current unit or not.
Your local recruiter can sit and talk with you and help you get all the forms you need prepared.

Been in this process since July 2008 with the USCG. Light at the end of the tunnel though.

    Right...

...the best thing to do is find out what End Strength (I think I'm saying the right word) your unit is at. If your unit is 98% maned, a commander PROBABLY won't deny you the chance to leave the unit. But if your unit is 75% and at the begining of its life cylce....you can pretty much forget it.
