I used to be an ATi fan, but I caught one whiff of how much better nVidia's drivers worked and I switched. I've got an old AGP system that I'm contemplating putting a new card in, and only ATi makes AGP cards worth shit anymore, but I don't want to go back to the bloated, CPU-hungry Catalyst suite.

Has AMD whipped that software into shape yet?

I've heard they're better, but still not as good as nVidia. You could check out the omega drivers, which I've found to be a lot more reliable.

I'd be running XP, but that's good to know.

So Catalyst is more stable than it used to be, but does it still double the login time like it used to?

nVidia's drivers being supposedly better is such old news, if you fell for that you got duped. That was years ago when there stopped being much difference (or in fact ATIs more frequent driver updates fixed things faster).

Yeah mine is pretty slow to boot because of it. Catalyst is always the last to appear in the tray :wtc:

Not really.. ati still has horseshit drivers.

I use an firemv 2600 at work and the horseshit drivers for vista 64 cause screen tearing/lost pixels just moving a fucking window.:ugh2:

It lets you override in-game video settings and force the video card to apply certain kinds of effects that older games don't know how to specify themselves.

I didn't fall for it, I discovered it for myself. ForceWare runs better than I ever could've hoped Catalyst would.

Anyway, I just ordered a Sapphire Radeon HD3650, so we'll see how that works out.

On everything I've used in the past 4 or so years they're pretty much equally shitty.

Then what is your recommendation? I can always return the Sapphire if you can point me in the direction of a legitimate (and better) alternative.

ATI lost me forever....at least until there are widespread praises of Catalyst, I'm not trying that shit again.
