with all the hype around Rowling's Harry Potter books, i never bothered reading them... :sad2:

i saw the first movie, thought it was cool, saw the second movie, liked that one alot too... so i bought them on DVD. :)
then i saw the 3rd movie as soon as it came out. thought it was awesome... :bigthumb:

then a few weeks ago i saw a box set of the books (all 5 of them) brand new, in the 'adult' covers :mamoru: for cheap.

    so i bought em.

just finished reading the first book The Philosophers Stone... took me all of 2 days to read, but i've gotta say how much i really enjoyed it! :x: its been quite a while that an author has been able to really involve me & make me enjoy a book this way.
started reading The Chamber of Secrets this morning. :x:

i've conceded that these books are deserving of the hype. :hs: even though theyr'e childrens books... :hsugh:

    comments?

anyone hasnt read them before either?

you'll find it refreshing reading Harry Potter after something as heavy as the Silmarillion... :wiggle:

I read them a little while before the 1st movie came out. They were a lot of fun and the writing matures a little bit as the series goes on.

The first one is actually The Sorcerer's Stone. Anyway, I've read all the books and seen all the movies up to this point, and I must say that they are all very good :bigthumb: I can't wait for the next book/movie.

no... the first book is actually called the Philosophers Stone.

It was first released as the Philosophers Stone, because that is what the author named it.
well after that, the name was changed for the US market release to the 'Sorcerer's Stone' because Philosopher is too big a word for the American public... :mamoru:

If it had been called philosopher instead of sorcerer I would have known right off the bat what it was... sorcerer is way to broad a thing, & philosopher is just what it is.

but dont you think its funny that they chose to replace philosopher with sorcerer solely for the US market?

from an interview transcript i found:

"Why did they change the name of the book from HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER'S STONE to HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE in the US?"

Read the 1st one, great! Starting the 2nd one now :big grin: In general, I'm glad these books and the Lord of the Rings movies are accepted by mostly everyone. :bigthumb:

Sometimes it's embarassing to be a US citizen. :hs:

I believe the editor was thinking of the the children's parents when he suggested the title revamp. I imagine most soccer moms and dads wouldn't get the Philosopher's Stone reference. Kids are pretty adaptable, I'm sure all it would take was one trip to the library to look up philosopher's stone in the encyclopedia and they would be right on board.

as you get farther into the series, you'll notice that they're more books about children growing up and becoming adults rather than books FOR children. it is especially noticable in the last installment of the series (goblet of fire).

If you liked the first 2 than you are in for a real treat, 3, 4, and 5 well... words don't do them justice.

I saw the first movie so I thought I would try out the books. I liked the first 2 books, but half way through the 3rd I was hooked on it like crack. Could not put it down. Now I am one of those people that was as Walmart at 11 pm waiting around for midnight for the release when 5 came out.

    i'd like to know however:

did they actually change the content of the book to read Sorcerer's Stone? or only the cover? (like does Harry refer to it as the Sorcerers Stone, or the Philosophers Stone in the actual story?) :dunno:

If I remember correctly, it's referred to as the Sorcerer's Stone the whole time.

    oh, and another thing...

when is the next book supposed to be released? :x:

(someone at work told me it'll be called Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince... and that Chamber of Secrets has a lot of clues as to who the half-blood prince is. :dunno: )

Here's a question to think about:
Why hasn't Dumbledore gone after Voldemort already and just kill him?
