after i formated my first harddrive with a new install of server 2003. my secondary harddrive and its files were not recognized by new install. Is there an easier way to recover the harddrive without running one of those recovery tools (getdataback or R-Studio) ?

Assuming your previous operating system, you may just have an issue with Windows recognizing the drive.

Can you check Disk Management (Right-click My Computer -> Manage -> Storage -> Disk Management) to see if the drive is listed as an option? If it's not, check your device manager to see if you have an issue with it.

The harddrive is listed in the disk management section.. but it has no file system and 100% free space.

Was server 2003 previously installed on the first hard drive?

If you right-click on the drive, do you have the option of "Make Partition Active" ? I faintly remember having this issue once with the partitions on a RAID set, and I think this was how I solved it.
