Right now I have 2 hdds in the primary and secondary positions.

i also have two dvd burners in their rightful spots. I want to take out the master dvd drive because its old and replace it with a hard drive. so i was going to take the slave dvd drive and make it the master and make the new hdd the slave. can i do that or does it have to be a some type of media drive as a slave if there is one as a master?

As long as your C: drive is the primary master, you can setup the rest of the IDE devices however you want.

IDE devices are pretty much all alike hardware interface-wise. You set a jumper to configure the mode you need it to operate in (single/master, slave, or cableselect).
