    I purchased a WD 120gig HD from zipzoomfly.com I got it hooked up and everything it was even being recognized for a while. I hooked my old secondary HD up to the IDE port that WAS hooked into my CD burner, to transfer files. The new HD stopped showing up. Now my primary HD is almost completely full and my PC isn't recognizing the WD drive OR my CD burner. I have no clue what to do and it is extremely annoying. For the record I'm new at this switching/installing drives stuff so I have no clue what to do. PLEASE help me.

    Have you formatted the new drive?

    In Windows XP, right click My Computer, then go to manage. There is a disk management menu in there. You should see your new disk. Actually, it should automatically try to format it.

    Also, it sounds like you have your jumpers set incorrectly. Make one drive master and the other Slave.

    You're gonna call me stupid but I'm still running 98. I never messed with the drive that came with the computer, but I have set the WD HD as the slave. Nothing. An yes it was formatted when I first got it to show up. I have files on there. :wtc: It not being recognized now though, same goes for my burner.

    Make sure that you have only one master and one slave on each cable.

    They are on separate cables. They look like this....

    Motherboard====OG HD=====OG CD Rom drive
    MOtherboard====WD HD====CD Burner

    I have 3 of these drives and they all give me problems. However, if you take both jumpers off of the drive it will solve most of the problems. Including yours. Sounds weird I know but its the only thing that would make mine work.

    The CD drives have master/slave switches too. Make sure that the OG HD is a master, the OG CD is a slave, the WD HD is a master, and the CD Burner is a slave. Or just set all the jumpers to cable select and it should work.

    What drives are on what IDE channel? Your motherboard probably only has two IDE channels. Each cable should have two plugs. How and what plugs is each drive plugged into?

    For simplicity your boot drive should be plugged into IDE port 0 which is IDE channel 1 and the end connector. That drive should be set to master. The second drive on that cable should be set to slave though cable select should work also.

    I don't know. If you take the shitty diagram I had right there and turn it counter clockwise thats how it looks.

    Now when I tried to hook it up (both setting as slave and cable select) during boot up it said some shit about not able to boot from floppy, insert floppy etc. I unhooked the new HD again and it booted up fine.

    This is how I would first set it up assuming the new Western Digital will be your new boot drive (active, primary).

    Motherboard IDE2======NOTHING======CD Burner (set as master)
    Motherboard IDE1======OG HD (slave or CSL)=======Western Digital (master).

    Thank you for all the help. Turns out I was working with a bad drive. I bought a new one and had it installed instead so I didn't fuck anything else up. I really appreciate your help though and again I thank you.
