I typically get a lil sad for Thanksgiving, because I'm used to doing all of the cooking back home but here in West Africa we don't celebrate the holiday--even the embassy! So like last year, I just made a (turkey) pizza and called it a day.

This year, I have a few friends from college who will be here for the next couple of years... An alum, his wife, and three kids (damn they really did breed early). Well, the husband had to travel to London for a conference, so the wife was here by herself and wasn't going to do anything. So remembering how sad I was last year, I left the office early and hit like 5 markets. After finding only one turkey (a small 15 pound thing that was priced $250...which they then kept), I decided to purchase two large chickens which eventually bookended a heaping helping of homemade stuffing, accompanied by my candied yams, corn pudding, grilled cabbage (the only 'greens' that I could find), yeast rolls, gravy, and lattice peach-apple pie. So I surprised them with thanksgiving, and it was wonderful!

She was sooo happy. Adjusting to this place is really hard for the first couple months...as you think you're going crazy! You believe EVERYONE around you in stupid, and allergic to 'logic'. So I wanted to help her have a lil bit of normalcy. It was really nice, and helped me too! It was a wonderful Thanksgiving.

And I really felt awesome, too!
