I was working some combinations today setting up a spinning hammer fist. I like it because even if your forearm hits the blade of your arm will do some damage. So im working it and all I have to say is unless your rocking boxing gloves your not getting good protection for sparring. Did a spinning hammer fist with combat sport mma sparring gloves. the other guy was wearing caged head gear and my fist hits dead on where it was supposed to.

My sparring partners and I go pretty hard because we wear caged head gear chest and rib protectors elbow guards basically everything you need not to hurt the other person so we can go all out every now and then and simulate real competition as best as possible. unfortunately when the hammer fist hit I hurt myself.

so I go to the dr and get an exray done and I dont see shit on the x ray so I think im good. nope .... a got a minor fracture in my hand on the bone that connects to my ring finger. suckage. No impact on my right hand for a couple of weeks and definately no sparring

o well i have an excuse to work conditioning and my kicks

    Is that the "Shonie Carter"?

    Low percentage shot.
    Looks cool though.
Take care of your hand dude.

not spinning back fist, spining hammer fist. its different its a higher percentage move because if you hit with your forearm it still has a good chance of cutting the opponent. georges st pierre uses it he taught it in his instructional.

as for the caged head gear

thats what we use so we can get more aggresive with head shots. You still get rocked but you dont get cut which is a problem for some people. my freind that wears it cuts easy above his eye so he always wears it so he doesnt lose any time in training because of a cut

I try and spar over 40 rounds a week of stand up this lets me get more aggressive and I dont have to worry about my training partner it lets me get more realistic training. Boxers have been using similar head gear for a long time to spar the one that actually introduced me to it is angelo dundee who is muhamed alis former trainer. if you look at it all it is is boxing head gear with a cage over it.

I know jermain taylor uses something similar as well. So its effective alot of fighters use it or something similar. It also helps you alot because it restricts your vision so when you do fight with out that handi cap you have an advantage. I like using it and it works for me.

I know chuck lidell trains using it as well he uses a heavier version called bogu. if you get the ultimate iceman dvd you see him fighting in it

you really have two options when your sparring wear more protection or pull your punches I have never in training held back any of my punches so I get more effective training because I can beat up my sparring partners as hard as i hit the heavy bag and vice versa

I think it dates back a little longer than boxing

also, that makes no sense what-so-ever. How can not worrying about your sparring parter make it more realistic?

Why do I get the feeling this is three guys taking time off from WoW to spar and stick fight in their backyard with their face cages and spinning back hammer fists while getting all their instruction from downloaded instructionals....

I guess the real question is, do you have a shield to go along with the caged helmet?

If we were sparing and I hurt my hand on that goofy ass head gear I would kick him in his huge steel cup. How the fuck can you see out of that thing? And how do you get used to taking hard shots? It is NO way makes training more realistic.
