i'm going to be shooting at a halloween party this weekend. it's going to be dark with blue lights spotlights and dim lighting inside. also there's decorations out in the backyard.

i was thinking to use a flash with -2 exposure and aim it at the ceiling/behind me and for outside use a diffuser. would this be fine?

  2. in my experience with halloween parties the shit gets out of hand and alot of people attend. People usually drink and the place will probably get packed and drunk people will start bumping into you. Unless you have an inexpensive point and shoot I woudlnt even bother bringing your camera unless you are getting paid some serious monayz...

try this: Flash exp around -1 -2 with stofen at the normal 45-80ish tilt, second curtain sync (important!), medium iso (200-400), longest shutter you can handhold without motion blur.

That will allow colours to expose while flash fills in the details. second curtain sync should keep the images looking sharper.

my set up for the club: 800-1600 iso, diffuser w 430ex flash head on, 1-1.5 sec shutter, 2nd curtain sync, and just one wide lens. (i use a tokina 12-24, or even the kit 18-55 worked fine)

i just tried some of these settings around the house, good advice! i can think of a lot of low light situations where i will be able to apply this sort of thing.

1+ second shutter might create some cool party effects, but not if they are memories for a family.

  9. :hsugh: Yea do this if you want blurry pics with alot of noise.. :mamoru: :bigthumb:

I shoot nearly every indoor party with a

Tamron 28-75 at F4.5 to f 5.6 shutter speed between 100 and 250 depending on how much ambient light I want.
580 EX bounced usually off the ceiling but sometimes behind me or into a corner
ISO 100 to 400 depending on how bright I want the flash to be
+ 0 to 1 stop of Flash exposure compensation depending on ceiling geometry and color.

I disagree with people who said to use 2nd curtain sync. Its good but I think you will miss the 'moment' that you are trying to capture if you use slow shutter. Usually after people see the first flash go off they will move out or away and by the time the 2nd flash goes off the 'moment' you tried to capture is over.

Also: I'm going to have to try out some of the suggested settings. Thanks all.

isn't 2nd curtain just one flash before teh shutter closes? it's not 2 flashes.

Unless its different on Canon or other systems but on Nikon the pre flash goes off at beginning then the flash goes off again at the end.

  18. You don't go around using 2nd curtain sync for every shot, just shots like people dancing and stuff to show motion and still get good results. If Molly and Danny come up to you and want a shot of themselves you obviously woudlnt use 2nd curtain sync for the very reason you just mentioned.

I was talking about using ~1/50th, whatever can be hand held. And yes pete, I would use 2nd curtain for every shot.

At 1/50th shutter does 2nd curtain make a big difference?

and FWIW should I go to this event dressed up and just party or should I shoot it?

1-1.5 second shutter? are you kidding me? a turtle would blur in that picture. much less people in a club environment
